1982 toyota alternator

Alright guys before you slam me.. I have two browsers open with probably 10 tabs each on this topic.. I have seen the GM 1 wire, GM 3 wire, JAG alt upgrade, the list goes on.... What i have not seen is a plug and play for my alternator. I have an 1982 sr5 (this year had 2 plugs available) It appears I have an oval plug, not square, and certainly not the round one found on the 22re that the JAG alt upgrade works on. So my point is I have searched this a bunch, and I am not finding what I want.

What I don't want.
1 wire- for many reasons I read up on.
3 wire- because after a $115+ reman alt, $45 + brackets, $25+ all the shipping or taxes .. I can basically buy a High-Output bolt in model.
Jaguar alt - as I still have to rewire, or buy new plugs..

The truth is I don't run a heavy load on the truck, but 40amps is not enough, and my alt seems to really struggle with anything less that 3500+ rpms..

So I have seen people say, well this might, or check that, or their are toyota direct plug ins.. Do any of you first gen people have a true drop in alt that will plug into my harness & mounts at 80+ amps? Someone said a toyota mr2 spider would, but I haven't seen the right plug..

I am probably missing something, I usually am, but if I did please just point me in the right direction.

Again my rig is a DD, I have hella lights that rarely come on, and I don't need a marine waterproof, 160+ amp, beast alt for the winch I can't afford, and the river crossings I don't do

Thanks,
JM

What are you running that draws so much power, then? On my camper, I've got speakers and an amp, all the usual lights plus the clearance lights of the RV (all incandescent bulbs), plus am usually charging something through the cigarette lighter, plus the alternator is charging two batteries (truck battery and camper battery).

I have the original Toyota 1978 alternator and it does just fine.

? What kind of stuff are you running?? More likely yours is just failing and needs to be replaced.

There is also this to consider: http://toyotamotorhome.org/forums/in...showtopic=5794

The gist of it is that with a regular old single belt drive on your truck, you aren't going to get anything extra out of a higher output alternator. It needs more drive to get extra juice. But this part is all just stuff I read on the internet, not stuff I have personal experience with, so take it how you want.

Thanks for the reply. The only thing I use is the stereo which is aftermarket, but I have stock speakers.. No subs or anything.. I do spend a bunch of time in lower than 3500 rpm.. which is when I think it is draining. You are probably correct though. It is going bad.

I would like something a bit stronger though as I do have the hella lights, and would like to put some better speakers in.. stuff like that. I get your point though.

I will check out the link.. Thanks again!

I really like the idea of reducing the pulley size to make the alt spin faster, increasing low end idle speeds, and charge..

The pulleys do not seem as readily available as he says though, and online I am finding them in the $30-40 range.. not $8.

Well, let us know what you do.

A functioning stock alternator should have more than enough strength to power everything you're talking about.

I will, my two options now are finding the smaller pulley to increase low end amps.. Or I might buy a denso type alt repair harness plug (the style that fits 1985+ 4runners/pickups), cut my plug off, rewire, and then do the Jag drop in 130amp..

Still just sourcing parts, comparing prices, and diagnosing my electrical systems. I might have short, or something else going on that is causing the issues... I assumed alt because symptoms of what others complain of on the early trucks is exactly what I am seeing.
