I just recently bought an 82 hilux. It's 4wd with around 200k. I have an 87 2nd gen toy 4x4 with 125k and I'm wondering the compatibility between transmissions. Both are manuals. Will they be a direct swap? I read something on the build changes between 1st and 2nd gen trannys stating toyota completely revamped for the better? Any information on the transfer case would also be appreciated. Can I double those years, and is either or chain drive or gear drive?

 

transfer case should be the same right? the trans will swap out...but the shifter locations are diff...so you would have to have the floorboard a bit to accomodate the new shifter location.

Rebuild the stocker or get one from marlin. They are a little weak....but are fine if you dont dump the clutch all the time. Thats what kills the input shaft bearings in these trannies. Start out easy...dont power shift. Remember you are in a 30-35 year old 4x4 4cyl.

 

Dude the L is shorter than g/w series but my hilux came with a G that had no mods to the trans mount, just used the dshaft from the 87 ;-)
