'87 4runner 22re efi swap to lexus IS300? will it work??

Hey, I'm new to the forum and i have a mechanic friend that does all my work cause i'm useless with tools on anything that isn't a firearm. I have a 1987 4Runner that originated in Washington state. I bought it and had it shipped to Tulsa, Oklahoma. The 22re efi that is in it has no AC and is at approximately 250k miles. Also I am averaging approximately 14mpg.

Will I be better off adding an AC to my existing motor and having it rebuilt and hoping that my mpg goes up or should i rebuild and sell this motor and put in a new one? Also does anyone know if a lexus is-300 will bolt up and work with my stock 5 speed tranny? the is-300 would run around $1600 for a crate motor. I'm open to suggestions as my knowledge stops at being able to drive it like I stole it. Here are some pics of my new (old) baby. Zero rust xD!

Would be a pretty tight squeeze getting the motor from an IS300 in there, its a Straight-6 if I recall correctly. Also, it wouldn't bolt up, custom adapters would have to be made, as well as probably all of the wiring. You're looking at a LOT of money, everything would have to be custom fabbed. Better off looking into a 5VZ swap if you want more power.

First off, welcome to Yotatech lynch!

From my understanding, the trans will bolt up Buick. The IS 300 uses a W series manual trans, as does his 4runner (W56 if I'm not mistaken) so they should match up. At the very least, he'd have to change the bell housing over to the IS bell housing.

Also, I've seen people swap the older, 7M straight six into the older trucks. It is tight, but doable. I don't see why the IS 300's 2JZ wouldn't fit also. Lynch, I would google search 2JZ swap into a first gen 4runner on google, and see where that gets you.

That's excellent info in both cases, I hadn't thought of a 5vz, I was hoping that since the lexus is still the same yota family that the iron block IS 300 would work out as a viable swap. Now i've got info to do more homework and Lord willing I'll have a monster soon. I'm not wanting to do it simply for more power, if that were the case I would just gear the thing properly for what I wanted. I'm hoping that the more modern IS 300 will be able to bring the power and also boost my fuel economy for an all around positive swap out. Thanks again and I'll keep ya updated.
