Hey everyone,
First time posting here. I come on alot and read up on all the cool stuff on here but never posted before.
I've searched but couldn't find any similar problems.

So with my 88' 4runner with a 22re i sometimes have problems with it starting when the engine is just warm, not hot, not cold, just at the point where the temp gauge is barley coming off the coldest mark. It tries to start right away like normal but then nothing. you can keep cranking it for about 10 seconds and then it will start kind roughly, but if i hold the gas peddle to the floor it starts quicker but still rough. After it starts and kinda stumbles for 1 second it runs fine.
Other than that the motor always runs good. It starts fine when its hot, and cold. I live in North Dakota and in the winter when its -60 degrees with the windchill it starts no problem.
I have replaced quite a bit of stuff when i bought it, like lots of stuff, because im assuming it was sitting for atleast 5 years. But the fuel filter and pump are new. so i dont think its that. It seems to me its getting to much gas because it starts easier when i hold the gas to the floor, which cuts off the fuel? I think? And again its only when the engine is luke warm when it does this.
Any help would be appreciated!

 

you should never have to hit the gas to start a vehicle with a fuel injected/throttle body motor. sounds like a fuel issue to me. possibly your injectors.

 

Yeah doesn't it cut fuel if you hold it to the floor? I've been told that....Let me add that when I bought it after doing a timing chain job I found the gas tank to be filled with black sludge about an inch thick on the bottom. new gas tank, pump and filter like i said. And I've put alot of miles on it since I've done that to it.

 

black sludge you say... sounds like you need to send off your injectors to get cleaned.

 

Really? Even though it runs pretty dang good other than that one problem?

 

I've been having the same problem been at the shop for a week n no clear answer so were giving up, try ur cold start injector off the throttle body if it leaks when warm that's ur problem wish that was mine but not.

I'm gonna try another used cold start timing switch see if that fixes mine

 

how could i check to see if the cold start injector is leaking? As easy as just looking at it? I have never seen any wetness around it the bolt.

 

Take it out when warm and try to crank if it sprays fuel or leaks it's bad

 

Its so weird to me that it seems like it starts easier when i hold the gas peddle to the floor. that is just boggling my mind its seeming like to much fuel.

 

Oh so take the bolt right out? Would that tell me if the cold start injector is pumping when it should not be?

 

Take the two bolts out n pull it out of the intake leave it hooked to the fuel line n plugged in

It did spray a big burst and was very noticeably wet when i first tried it.Motor was luke warm valve cover warm to the touch. But I only tried it once so I didn't see if it continued to spray.
When i took it out of the intake it was all dirty with what looked like the black stuff in my tank but there was only a little bit and i cleaned it off.

 

Well if it sprayed and it was running temperature n just shut off then that's ur problem can send it to witch hunter to be rebuilt for 25$

 

Yeah it looked to only have sprayed for a second of two. And i'll add the motor isn't warm enough to read on the temperature gauge, but tt was warm.

 

Yea get it to were its normal temp on the gauge n check it

 

Just for the record pushing your pedal to the floor only gives it more air.

If your cold start injector is spraying fuel the extra air will help.

Before sending your injector off just figure out what is going on.

It could be the temp sensor or the time switch either of these will keep the injector open.

The cold start injector is part of the starting circuit.

if there is dirt in the injector it will spray fuel as long as there is pressure in the system

 

Ok I just tried it with the engine warm on the gauge. No fuel came out. But the problem only happens when the engine temp gauge isn't even coming up yet, but the engine is warm to the touch.

As far as what I can just figure out, when the engine is just barley warm and doesn't need the extra fuel, the cold start injector sprays it anyways. But when its fully warmed up (hot) it doesn't spray extra fuel. Possibly because of a bad temp sensor?

 

Yea you can take the coldstart switch and Ecu temp switch out and put in a pot of boiling water and check for ohm change. There both a green and black plug with a connector right under the thermostats water neck

 

Also check the fuel pressure vsv to make sure its working, its supposed to help raise fuel pressure when starting the engine. More fuel pressure means more fuel.
