Hi guys! New Toyota Pickup owner here! Could use some advice!!!
Hi guys. How’s it going? I just recently purchased a 91’ 2wd Pickup w/ a 22re off craigslist w/ 208k miles. Her name is Jade & she’s gonna be my work horse.
After a little routine maintenance (spark plugs, oil change, air filter, ect..) she was running solid.
The timing chain guide was broken (go figure) – so I recently did the whole swap. Everything bolted up great.
I also swapped out the Fuel Filter during the process.
So long story short, I bolt her back up and try to start her - but she’s really resistant.
I have to let her sit for about 5 minutes in between start-up tries.
When I do get her to fire up she runs/drives/idles great. I have the timings set to -5 BTDC with the resisters tripped.
The only way I can get her to fire up properly is if I step on the throttle while cranking the engine. Even then it takes a good 3-5 cranks before it fires up.
Another problem she’s having is after idling for 5-10 minutes – she stalls out. Then she’s difficult to get started back up again.
But if I give it throttle every now and then it runs/idles smoothly.
Things I’ve tried:
-Timing is set perfectly
- Spark plugs/wires are all good
- Fuel filter is facing the right direction
- All vacuum hoses are properly connected
- Clean Throttle Body
- IAC (I took the IAC off, but I didn’t remove the thermostat. Just sprayed it out)
- Inspected distributor cap
- Checked all connections/gronds
What I think:
Did the fuel pump decide to crap out on me?
Perhaps it might be something to do with the idle injectors?
And ideas guys?
Thanks!
Here's some before and after pictures.

Check your fuel pressure.Sure sounds like that might be the problem.
it could also be the circuit opening relay coil drops out shutting off thefuel pump
What kind of new filter perhaps it is defective from new.
Stepping on the throttle just gives it more air
Pray tell what are Idle injectors??

Please forgive me if I'm coming off like a noob. I'm no professional mechanic. (chef for a living). Cars are just a hobby of mine.
I was under the impression there was some sort of idle air fuel injector in these cars that added additional fuel to the intake during start-up/idle. But now that I think about it - that makes no frikking sense. So yeah - I'm still learning.
I think my multimeter is fubar. Plus I don't own a pressure gauge. So I guess I'm making a trim to Harbor Freight tomorrow morning.
I wana say its a generic puroalator filter. You might be right - it could be factory defective. I'll swap it out tomorrow and see if that changes anything.
I picked up a new fuel pump off ebay anyways. It's always good to have a second one on hand for those long trips. Should be here by Friday.
Thanks for the help!

What you meant to say instead of idle injector was the cold start injector .It gives a shot of fuel into the intake manifold while cranking to make easier starts.
When these engines have all the bugs worked out mine all started on the first crank.
with the electric fuel pump if the system has lost pressure turning the ignition switch on counting slow to 5 before cranking should be good.
