I have a 1988 4x4 with a 22re engine. There are 2 hoses: (1) one right after the throttle body ,which usually has a plugged hose attached to it, and (2) one right right next to the throttle sensor that are just plugged. When i bought the truck last year it was like this. I recently had the engine rebuilt at 326,000 miles and asked the guy if he knew and he just shrugged his shoulders. It doesnt seem to effect the engine, but im just really curious. I have looked at hundreds of pictures and diagrams online, but the engines differ so much it seems even within the same year. Any ideas for my piece of mind?

 

The first picture is a vacuum line that runs to your power steering idle/air valve. That is the pre-throttle body vacuum port. There should be another one that runs post-throttle body port on the intake manifold. There will be a dual idle/air valve on the power steering pump for both of these line.

The second picture is your thermostat by-pass hose. It goes from the port on the back of the thermostat housing to the throttle body. It keeps the throttle body from icing on cold days.
