I know I have seen a thread here regarding this, but after searching I cannot find it.

I want to replace the struts supporting the Lift Gate on my 2000 4Runner. Who makes good struts, what should they cost and where should I get them?
Part/Model nubers would be good!

What's wrong with your lift gate strut support?? they went out already?? I have a set on my truck for sale if you are interested...good luck and good day

 

KYB made mine..and well they seem to work great

 

They sag in winter and at altitude.
They do fine in summer, but I hate to keep pushing the gate up when over 8000 feet.

 

I see!! Guess the best way is to replace by newer model 4Runner struts or get some new one, I think I experience this too before on my 4Runner and thought it was normal...so mine won do any good for you.

 

You could probably get a factory replacement from TOR (here on the forum) at a good price. He's hooked me up many times.

 

Check PepBoys,Checkers,etc.,they might have 'em;I got a set for my Eclipse for under $40.

 

Does anyone know anything about upgrading these to stronger shocks? I have dynamat in my liftgate, live at 6,000ft (and go up to 13,000ft quite regurlarly), and have some cold winters that all add up to bumps on my head. Anyway to up the pressure internally or something?

several folks have suggested that if you exercise the struts regularly they will give better performance. Meaning open the back end and manually raise and lower the hatch several times in a row.

This may rejuvenate them enough to meet your needs. If not just replace them with a junkyard find or use a discounted Yota parts dealer like my buds at TRDparts4u.com or even Rock Auto or Auto Parts Warehouse.

And while you are at it you might consider struts for your hood to replace that flimsy prop rod. Redline Tuning sells them, and others have jury rigged up their own from Landcruiser hood struts.

Same deal-exercise the struts regularly. Each time I open the hood or hatch I raise and lower it about 5 times to juice 'em up.

 

Not to dig up an old thread but I am looking at replacing my lift gate struts as well.
I have been in contact with Frank over at StrutWise and he will be reconditioning my struts so that they are stronger. I go up to Tahoe alot and winter is coming up and I have noticed that I have to hold it up.

I just have to find out how to remove the old struts??? Has anyone removed it before? Is it as easy as removing just the bolts? Any help would be much appreciate it.
