Picking up a '78 4X4, big things to look for, general thoughts? ?

Hey all,

New to the forum, first thread and post.

I'm grabbing a '78 4X4 from a buddy of mine relatively cheap cause it needs a tranny (which I have). Planning on throwing a new clutch kit and my tranny in it and just doing a little cleaning up on it. I plan to drive it for a little bit then flip it. Older 4x4's tend to hold value pretty decently in my area and they go pretty quickly on Craigslist.

I'm not really familiar with this generation, my only real toyota truck experience (in terms of owning) was a '94 Runner.

Anyway, what are some big problem things to look for with the truck in terms of wear? I'm considering a 22re swap (prefer fuel injection by far), I'm a competent mechanic though not a professional, basically got it because I have missed wrenching and cold beers on Sundays.

Also, what's the yota community take on these trucks? Sought after? total dogs? Basically any input or discussion welcome as I am not familiar with these models. Thanks in advance!

Just look at it as a new plane your about to make a very long over water flight.

Your a mechanic just look at the things that help keep you alive tires, brakes, assorted brake lines, suspension, and over all condition .

Rodent nests in the air cleaner chewed wires those kind of things.

Those era trucks some love them others indifferent some can`t stand them.

Converting that engine to EFI could really be interesting electronics and upgraded fuel system.

A engine swap to a 22REC may be easier but really add to the costs of the project and detract from the value to any real hard core lovers of this era truck.
