1995 2.4L automatic

So there is this constant chirping from the front of my engine bay. I've replaced belts, P/S tensioner, and A/C tensioner. Still it's there. It's not consistent either. Sometimes it's there, sometimes not, sometimes high pitched, sometimes low, and it increases in sound frequency, pauses, then starts again.

And the fan blade is a bit wobbly. It has sounded pretty bad for a long time but everyone says they rarely fail and don't bother replacing it until they do.

Do engine pulleys go bad? Do the make noise often?

Check for a loose fan shroud. The fan could be contacting it, sporadically.

 

No loose fan shroud.

It only does it when the truck is in gear. In neutral or park the sounds go away. So it must be under load to cause it. Does this lead to any thoughts.

The fan clutch wouldn't squeak or squeal, right?

Do pulleys actually go bad? bearings in pulleys?

 

The fan should not wobble or make noise. I'd start with that. Remove it and see if the noise goes away (just don't drive too far without it.)

I think I'll pull each belt and check it that way. The problem is needing two people because the truck has to be in gear for the sound to happen. Plus it just snowed feet here so it'll be a day or two until I get to it.

 

There is a bearing in the fan pulley bracket that can fail. If the fan nuts are tight and it still wobbles, look to see if it's the mounting where the four nuts are that's wobbling or the fan clutch.

 

Okay, for starters I must admit my embarrassment by stating that the belts were not as tight as they should be. I did some research and they are supposed to be way tighter than I thought. Most noises now gone.

Can they be too tight?

There is still however a small squeak/chirp from the AC. I've replaced the tensioner.

What could it be? Does the pulley have a bearing that could go bad? Is replacement easy? hard? expensive?

I know my system needs a recharge but I doubt this could be the culprit.
