heat...vent...bi level..defrost

OK been cleaning ducts out and blower motor out for a few days. Found some things I need to fix like my (heat, vent, bi-lvel..etc) lever. Cable is to flimsey. Anyway my question is what are the functions of these 4 settings? Like when I have it switched to each setting...where should I feel air...and where shouldn't I feel it?

Front vents, both the front vents and the lower vent above the transmission hump, the lower vent, and the top vents that blow on the windshield.

Alright one more question...the flap is broken that allows it to switch from inside air to outside air. I can do an easy fix but it won't allow me to change between the 2. Should I go inside air all the time...or outside air all the time?

is it broken or disconnected? id try to fix it, it could help out in the winter to have fresh heat when carrying passengers, and if im not mistaken your defrost blows hard on fresh air, when switched to recirculate it acts as an intake for the blower

Disconnected ..small rod that moves flap back and forth. Can't see how to get connected again. Possible small screw missing. The flap I'm referring to is directing behind the glove box....right now i have it zip tied to fresh air....
