I was buying a thermostat for my truck, and I noticed that the parts stores list both 180*, 190*, and sometimes 195* as factory temperature. I even looked at OEM thermostats on eBay and they also seemed to be 82*C and 88*C (180* and 190*F). I have a 1987 and 1982 FSM, and both of those list 190* as being the OEM temp. I also have a Clymer and Chilton repair manuals and those both say 180*. Searching forums also seems to come up with mixed results. The FSM also does not mention 22R, 22R-E, and 22R-TE as being different temps.

I would assume that 190* is factory since that is what the manual says, but why would so many places list 180* as being factory? Is that a cheap way to fix the temp gauge overshoot problems some trucks have? Do some models use 180* thermostats and some use 190*?

I am sure either temps are fine, but I would just like to clear this up in case I am overlooking something.

 

Get the 180 degree thermostat. It's what is mostly recommended.

 

I run the dual stage 190 degree thermostat, never had any issues with it.
