I have a 1987 Toyota 4x4, after locking my hubs I get a terrible grinding/roaring noise, ''sounds'' like its coming from right front. It started doing it a few months back, iv very recently had 5.29s installed, new cv axles, and hubs replaced and still have same noise. All it takes is locking the hubs, leaving it in 2wd it does it or in 4wd it does it. I really need it solved, any ideas, thanks

 

Id look at the problem hub and wheel bearing. betcha its not assembled right or the bearing is bad.

 

if it was the wheel bearing I would think it would do it all the time and I actually watched the hubs get installed cause I had a buddy do it at his garage off the clock. I don't know its really got me though

 

Well it's pretty easy check wheel bearings. Take it for a drive. Then after about 5 minutes pull over and feel the hubs. If its hot or very warm it's probably the wheel bearings. If not we check other places.

 

does it happen if you only lock in one hub or the other? Thats an easy way to isolate where it is as well.

 

I'm thinking spindle bearings. The clue is it makes noise only when you lock in the hubs. My 88 4R started to make noise one winter when I locked the front hubs in. Check out this. One of your spindle bearings is making noise when the CV shaft turns which means it needs grease. I made one of the spindle bearing lube tools. This is what the tool does. Here's another good thread. They can be greased with or without the tool. Without the tool you use a grease "needle" that's used for the recessed grease fittings. Check out that last link I posted...a lot of info there. I had the very same problem with my front drivers side. I tore it down and used a grease needle in between the splines and filled it up with grease.
While this may not be the best way, it worked for me. Good luck
