New to toyota and must say I'm enjoying it so far. I came from chevy, so my expectations were really high.

I swapped a 3.0 that had a blown head gasket and put in a new motor and when I started it up yesterday it still smoked. Is that cause of build up in the exhaust from before or might I have hooked something up wrong.

 

Welcome to the yota family! I'm no expert like some on here but I had a similar experience. When I swapped out a new 3.0 after a blown head gasket it did take a couple days before it stopped smoking and there was also a slight smell of burning antifreeze. In my case it was burned out of the exhaust in a couple days.

 

How thick was it? I took the truck for a drive just up the street and it smoked out the neighborhood. For the amount of smoke there was I would have thought that I'd be burning through a lot more coolant but I didn't really have any coolant loss.

Only lasted half a day I'd estimate, it was thick right away but then thinned out after not too long.

 

I found I had a leak on the coolant line that comes out the valley cover and through the throttle bottle it pretty much filled that side of the valley cover. Fixed that and got it up to temperature there doesn't appear to be any leaks no coolant in the crank case but it's still steaming a lot I'm not sure how much it's suppose to be steaming but it's enough to make me nervous. I'm going to take it for a drive now and see if it is as bad is it was yesterday

 

Could be left over residual coolant in the exhaust. Hopefully it isnt another bad head gasket on the motor you just swapped. If that is the case, the block does have to be decked. Unless the intake isnt completely sealed. You arent experiencing and coolant loss now?

 

Yeah I repaired the coolant line and it went away now I'm onto another problem, the back of the block where the coolant hoses go into the firewall is leaking because I'm a tool and rushed putting the motor in. I twisted off one of the bolt heads of the piece that it all connects to. Oh well time to take the plenum off again and fix it not a real big deal, I must have a vacuum leak some where cause this thing reals off gas

 

When you pull then plenum double check all the injector o rings, one if not more may be broken and need to be replaced. Also make sure the main fuel supply line is tight and the secondary line off the fuel rail that bolts onto the plenum isnt broken. I have had that happen to me. As for the coolant I have broken that too, is there any way you can post pics? I might be able to help a bit more if I could see where your problem lies. I have a 94 4Runner that I have already rebuilt the motor myself.
