Exclamation 20R carb fast idle cam issue

Hey guys! first post here.

my truck is a 1977 pick-up, long bed, 20R 2.2 L engine, 2 wheel drive.
i am about ready to bludgeon this truck to death with a crowbar

anyways, the bolt that keeps the fast idle cam in place (and consequently is linked to the choke as well) keeps backing itself out, causing the engine to run poorly at idle, or often not at all when it pops out. and i can't cinch down the bolt properly, it binds up the cam AND the choke not allowing them to move. (who designed this?!?!)

have i got a piece missing? i know several less than great mechanics were in it before i bought it and may have messed stuff up.

You should download or buy the fsm and check if there is anything missing to keep that bolt from backing out. I don't have the same carb therefore I can't check for you. How about locktite? It should be an easy fix. If people view and don't reply it's not because they don't want to help, it is because they don't know, and more often than not in that case it is better not to post.

fixed.

bought a rebuild kit and decided to go whole hog on the thing, cleaned it, replaced gaskets, etc.

some moron put in a washer that doesn't belong there, it was binding up the cam. remove washer, torque down bolt, works perfectly.

also, thought everything pre 84 had the same carb? this is the pre 84 section...

Glad you got it fixed.

Not every carb was the same, in fact, Toyota switched from a 20R motor like yours to a 22R motor in the middle of 1980. There are a lot of guys with 4x4's here, and almost all of the 4x4's were 22r. Not the same carb at all.

Then there are those of us with Webers. I've never seen the factory carb for mine, it came with a Weber already.

Glad you figured out the problem!
