Need Help W/ Pickup Catalytic Conveter
Sorryfif this information is found elsewhere on the site. This is basically a follow up to a thread I made about my pickups exhaust problem (failing Cali emissions test).
My pickup has aftermarket headers, so I assumed the catalytic converter wad removed. I went to look under the vehicle, and I see a cat that appears to have been welded into the exhaust. A few thoughts/questions arose when I saw it:
1.how many catalytic converters do the '84 pickups have?
2.Was the cat relocated/welded/patched in due to the header installation.
3 Is it too close to the muffler, or too far from the manifold?
I'm troubleshooting/getting an idea of why my car fails smog, and I have a few hunches, although I'm not a professional. I learn as I read, and am an analytical thinker, so Im able to draw a couple conclusions.
So, I'm just trying to eliminate potential causes, narrowing my problems in order to repair it.
Thanks once again to anybody who may help shed some light on this situation.

There should only be one.
2.Was the cat relocated/welded/patched in due to the header installation.
Should be located directly under you drivers seat in relation. sbout a foot or two before your muffler.
3 Is it too close to the muffler, or too far from the manifold?
PICS!!!

If it was welded in i would maybe cut it back off to make sure someone didn't hollow it out while in there.

As was stated, the 22R engine only uses one catalytic converter.
Universal aftermarket catalytic are commonly welded on the exhaust pipe. Some are a "direct fit" as in bolt-on like my Walker CARB catalytic converter, even though it is still an aftermarket cat converter.
As Steves said we need pics.
Which emission(s) is failing. Post up your numbers.
