Hesitation going from R to Drive...anyone else? '03 4Runner, V8

I think this was spoken about a while ago, but I could not find the thread. Every time I shift from reverse to drive backing out of my driveway there is a hesitation before the gear engages it seems like. Its weird, its about 1-2 sec hesitation. I have asked 2 service guys at one dealer and 1 at another and two of them said its normal and one said its the because of the all-time 4wd. Anyone else experiencing this problem? Any info is appreciated...thanks

Mine does the same thing. Usually at first start up backing out of the garage. My wife's Subaru Forester does it too, AWD, so I believe it is the 'slack' being torqued up in the driveline. Sometimes I get a 'clank' when I back up too. Almost like my part time Runner when I back up to get it out of 4X4. But I have the V8.

Both my parents BMW's do it too. I think the pause is the tranny sitting in neutral for a second to let everything stop spinning. I find allot of auto's do it.
