1992 22re 4wd extra cab. Pretty sure i have a 19 gallon fuel tank? Mine just started leaking... I did search and i'm almost sure thats what i have, but i want to double check. Anything else i should replace while i'm in there? Straps? Gaskets? And where have some of you guys got tanks from at a good price? thanks.

where can i get a fuel filler neck?

 

For the 19 gallon tanks (think actually 18.8 or so), you can only get those from the dealer.

There are 17 gallon tanks that you can buy aftermarket... For 2wd trucks I think, but should mount right up.

Neck filler will likely be dealer only as well...

 

So a 17 gallon tank would bolt up? i found them a bit cheaper.

 

yes a 17 gallon tank can be swap for a 19 gallon tank. The mounting dimensions are the same. The vertical height of the tank is the difference in the capacity. I would take the time to inspect the fuel lines while you are there and replace whatever is necessary. it is also a good time to clean, inspect and protect the part of your frame that the fuel tank hides.

 

Alright thanks. And I'm planning on pulling my bed and going over stuff. Im scared of how rusty stuff will be on there. Is the fuel pump for a 17 gallon tank the same for a 19? I wanna make sure I have the right parts cause I need to do it on a weekend when I'm home from school

 

I believe so, but I am not certain. I believe the pumps are the same and the fuel sending unit brackets are the difference between the 2 tank sizes. Double check before you order!!! When you pull the bed off. Measure everything on the tank, width, length, height bolt spacing, etc etc. get as much info as you can before you order.

another thought. There are some places around my hometown that refurbish gas tanks. Maybe call up a similar place near you and check on pricing. If you get it refurbished you wouldn't have to worry about if it fits or not..... Just a thought, Do your homework then triple check everything before you lay the money down...

hey, thanks a lot bone collector. The only thing is i don't really have time to take my bed off, measure and order. I take my truck to school during the week and come home on the weekends, so i need to order stuff for next weekend or the weekend after to change it when i come home. Might just get a 19 to be certain so i don't run into problems.

 

Just trying to help. One more tip. Spray the mounting bolts everyday with some pb blaster, wd 40 or the like. I have played the bolts on fuel tanks several times and the are ALWAYS rusted or corroded. Spray them thoroughly everyday till you change the tank. I wish you the best of luck

Just did the one in my 94 reg cab. if swapping tanks just go out through the bottom, my mechanic took bed off to do fuel pump and play with sending unit prior but to swap the tank he just went from undernieth.

 

I know i don't have to take the bed off, but i might just to check things out. I'll see when the time comes.

 

Replace your fuel pump while you're in there. It's Denso, so any of the Denso USA sites will sell you it in a kit w/ a new prefilter for ~$125. Sure beats it failing and having to pull everything again... A lot of folks on here are having trouble with fuel pumps as of late...

Wonder what the difference is at the tank level... Know plastics and ethanol don't mix, but maybe more rust protection on account of the water that ethanol likes to collect?

 

RSR, thanks for all the links man! i appreciate it. But i have good news, my dad's friend has a tank from an extra cab that he is giving me. My dad picked it up last night, so i'm assuming it's in decent shape. And thats a good idea on the fuel pump. My buddy has a fuel pump he bought for his regular cab that i may get off him, since i should just replace it while i'm in there.

Oh, and i can get a spectra tank (i believe) thats 19 gallon for my truck off rockauto for under $200 shipped. That's the cheapest i found.
