Tire survey (I would like EVERYONE's input)

This is different than the last tire question somebody else posted in that I want to quantify mileage and opinions on tires. The more people who respond and the more tires listed, the better the statistics. After everybody responds, I'll put together a table and make it publically available. Hopefully, this will help people decide which tires to get. Please respond with all the tires you've owned (if you can remember the answers) whether street tires or boggers. Do not include tires damaged by the trail for the mileage question.

1. Which tires have you owned?
2. How many miles did you get out of them?
3. How loud are they? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being a street tire, 10 being a Bogger)
4. How hard were they to maintain? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being just checked pressure, 10 being couldn't even balance them)
5. How was on-road traction? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being never hydroplaned or lost control, 10 being OMG I almost died)
6. How hard do you drive on-road? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being I drive like a granny, 10 being I drive like a Mario Andretti)
7. Would you recommend them to your friend?

Thanks,
Steve

Re: Tire survey (I would like EVERYONE's input)

Hey,

1. Which tires have you owned?

Here's the tires I currently own:

They are made by Toyo. Here's their website about them:

http://www.toyo.com/tires/tire_lines/lt_truck/opat.html

2. How many miles did you get out of them?

So far, I've driven about 15K on them. They are rated for 50K and it looks like I'll get that.

3. How loud are they? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being a street tire, 10 being a Bogger)

1 or 2 maybe. Very quiet.

4. How hard were they to maintain? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being just checked pressure, 10 being couldn't even balance them)

1 - Check the pressure and that's it. (Ask Loosehead about this. )

5. How was on-road traction? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being never hydroplaned or lost control, 10 being OMG I almost died)

2 I guess. Hard for me to say exactly as there are many different road surfaces here. Never hydroplaned, however. This is the first truck I've owned. You can push them pretty hard in corners and there's even a nice big "grey area" you can play with at the limits of adhesion.

6. How hard do you drive on-road? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being I drive like a granny, 10 being I drive like a Mario Andretti)

10 - See above.

7. Would you recommend them to your friend?

Yes, I would. They are nice off-road as well. They dig pretty well. I think they're pretty great tires. They come with a 500 mile / 45 Day money back guarantee if you don't like them.

Hope this helps!

Here's my answers...

1. Which tires have you owned?

My first set of tires on my truck were these crappy street tires, that offered little to no traction. So I replaced those within a week of buying it with a set of Dunlop Radial Rover A/Ts 31"/10.5"

2. How many miles did you get out of them?

I've been running them for about 25,000 miles and they're still about half to 3/4 tread left. I have no idea what they're rated for, but i'm guesing that I'll get atleast 50k-60k out of them.

3. How loud are they? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being a street tire, 10 being a Bogger)

I don't really have a basis for comparison with these, because it's pretty much the only set of tires I've owned. But I'd probably say that they're a 3 or 4.

4. How hard were they to maintain? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being just checked pressure, 10 being couldn't even balance them)

They're probably a 2 or 3, pretty much all I've had to do is check the pressure, but I also have to go out sometimes and pick out little rocks from the tread. The tread pattern on these loves to pick up little rocks.

5. How was on-road traction? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being never hydroplaned or lost control, 10 being OMG I almost died)

I'd say thay they're probably a 2 or 3. I've never hydroplaned with them, but occasionally from a stop when it's raining, or if there's a lot of water on the ground my tires will start slipping a little. These things also get very good traction in snow (well Icy roads and light snow ) My friends and I went up to Palomar Mountain last winter (it's pretty much the closest place to where I live that gets snow ) and the roads got really Icy, and there was about 3" or 4" of snow on the ground. My friends and I decided to see how well my truck handled the Ice (I had just gotten it a few months before) so we came down this hill in 4High, and I hit the brakes, and I only slid a few inches before stopping, so I think that's pretty good

6. How hard do you drive on-road? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being I drive like a granny, 10 being I drive like a Mario Andretti)

I probably drive a 7 or 8 on the scale. I like to go fast, but I don't go to fast.

7. Would you recommend them to your friend?

Yeah I would. My next set of tires is probably going to be a set of BFG Mudterrains or A/Ts (Not sure which one yet, I want good offroad traction, but I also want some tires that won't wear out in 15000 miles like I've heard of the mudterrains doing

Since I'm almost at the 50,000 mile mark, I'm going to be due for a new set of tires, so I also would like to hear what you guys have been running.

1. Which tires have you owned?

Currently I have a set of Goodyear Wrangler AT/S that came with my 4Runner.

2. How many miles did you get out of them?

So far, 45K, but I should be able to get them to 50,000.

3. How loud are they? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being a street tire, 10 being a Bogger)

1; they are definitely a street tire.

4. How hard were they to maintain? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being just checked pressure, 10 being couldn't even balance them)

1; they are easy to maintain

5. How was on-road traction? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being never hydroplaned or lost control, 10 being OMG I almost died)

2; While they have been awesome when they are new, as soon as I hit the 35K mark, I began to notice hydroplaning on the freeway, as well as more squeal through some tight turns. Also, in the light and icy snow winters of Colorado, the traction was not always there. Of course, this could have been because I have a 2wd.

6. How hard do you drive on-road? (On a scale of 1-10, 1 being I drive like a granny, 10 being I drive like a Mario Andretti)

5; I only drive hard when I have to in LA Traffic. Those who live here know what I mean.

7. Would you recommend them to your friend?

Sure, why not

Honestly, I haven't had too many problems with them. I just recently had a flat, but it was easily fixed. I would say that they have been quite reliable, and if the price is right, i plan on getting them again.

Michelins...!

I am on my 2nd set of All-Season Michelins, that I purchase at Costco. No, they are not aggressive like mud tires, BUT: I drive 99% of the time on PAVEMENT! They are quite. They have excellent (!) traction on wet pavement. They have decent traction on snow and dirt. There's nothing to maintain, other than an occasional wipe with a tire dressing. I do not drive my rig hard, but I often drive fast (keeping up with traffic). I have NEVER had a flat with these. Best of all, they wear like IRON. I got approx 80,000 miles from the first set, and they still had fairly decent tread left. My second set is also doing very well.
Would I recomment them to a friend? I just did.
