W50 Transmission Specifications and Tolerances

Hi All,

Finally rebuilding my W50, MYSELF. Shouldn't have taken the truck to Mr. Can'tmission the first time around.

I'm hoping someone has a Factory Service Manual (FSM) and can give me the specs and tolerances to check out while I'm inside the tranny.

The problem with the tranny is that it was popping out of 5th, but I could hold it in and drive just fine. As I expected, fifth and all the other gears look fine, synchros too! The needle bearing for the counter shaft had its race shredded up for some reason and though I will replace that bearing, I think the problem seems otherwise and may have just been a shifter bushing.

Nonetheless, there will be a great W50 rebuild(or at least disassembly) resulting with pictures and step by step write-up.

Thanks for any help
Keenan

Two questions for you:
1. Have you ever rebuilt a tranny?
2. Do you have all the specialty tools required to rebuilt a tranny?

If not, I think you're in for a bit of a struggle and most likey failure. I'm not doubting your skills or machanical know-how because I have no idea what your experience or abilities are, but it's not exactly a take it apart and put it back together process. Personally, I can do pretty much anything when it come to motors, suspensions, axles, etc, but I wouldn't dare break open a transmission.

Then again, everybody has to start somewhere so I wish you good luck on your courageous adventure and I hope it turns out well

Oh, and the tranny info is in the FSM. There is a thread on here somewhere that has a download link for the 1983 FSM.

Thanks for the link to the 83 FSM.

1. I have never disassembled or rebuilt a transmission. Prior to rebuilding my first engine, I had never done that either. I'm willing to find out if I can do a transmission. But for the most part it is looking like a "take it apart and put it back together" with some measuring and rational skills thrown in there.

2. I do seem to have the "specialty tools". They are: snap ring pliers, gear/bearing pulling + homemade super extender, and bearing separator for disassembly. Reassembly tools look like snap ring pliers and appropriately sized pipe for pressing on bearings (or take it to a shop to have them do it).

Thanks for the good luck wish. I guess we'll all find out how it went in a month or so. I'm taking it SLOOOOWW so I don't end up doing it again.

Upon further inspection last night it seems that a few key parts were more worn than I realized: reverse gear where the fork rides and where it slids onto 5th (which also acts as the hub for 5th), 5th gear(not the helical cut portion, but what the "hub" slides onto), 5th/rev fork is worn down about .030" which ends up resulting in LOTS of play on the actual hub. Also, the infamous shifter cap, which probably started this all.

More to come!

Where are you getting your parts? These guys have a rebuild kit:

http://www.marlincrawler.com/transmi...ld-kit/l50-kit

They mention worn shifter forks as a potential cause of popping out of gear, but I doubt that's the only thing that will do it. I just ordered a rebuilt tranny from them (mine's a 4 speed) but I won't get it for a month or two. I want to rebuild a tranny but not yet. Maybe I'll do the SM420 on my Napco.

83 FSM will do you no good, since an 83 would have an L50/52. You'll need a later FSM. Try the 84-85 section and see if they can guide you.

I rebuilt my transfer case with the help of Trail Gear's online videos. Tranny is exponentially more complicated, but the same idea. If you have the right kind of mind and method, I'm sure you can get through it...
