86 auto erratic shifting

as the title states im having shifting issues with my 86. ive read posts about the shift solenoids but it seems most were getting the blinking overdrive light, and im not. light works fine ive checked that. is there a way to troubleshoot the solenoids to see if that is in fact what my problem is. the only thing i can think of is to unplug the tranny cpu and manualy go through the gears but am i missing something?

This is for a Honda, but it's the same concept, should help you out a little...

Check, test, adjust your TPS first.
