I don't post often but I figured I would share. 94 p/u 4x4 22re manual

Moved up to ak pulled the truck in the garage to winterize it. Figured while I had it apart I would go ahead and fix my pesky oil pan leak. After removing the pan I found this waiting for me



Initial thought is timing chain tensioner. But who knows?! If anyone has any advice please feel free to share it with me

Looks like a piece of your timing chain guide. Better get that fixed before it eats thru the cover and you have bigger problems. You're lucky you caught it in time.

 

All accessories on the front of the engine are already stripped. I'm not going to play around with this. Already looking online to see if I can do it with out removing the head

 

you could remove the timing cover without removing the head, since you've already remove the oil pan that's already half the job. It seems like you already have steel backed guides, thats kinda odd for it to break. Makes me wonder if my china made guides will break......

 

Any idea of who makes the best timing chain kit?

This is going to sound a but far fetched but what are the chances that the chunk of tensioner has been in my oil pan for over 100k since the rebuild? Here is why I ask

Idk what it could be, it could be any left over broken pieces from the previous guides. Engnbldr sells quality timing chain kits, "The H/D timing kit is $58.80. The kit with cover is $88.80.
The 4 piece combo, timing kit, cover, coolant pump and oil pump is $154.80."-Ted

 

That's not a bad deal. I'm kinda torn on what to do tho. If everything is in good order. Why replace it? But on the flip side I'm already there so...

 

your cover looks good - no grooves from the broken guide/chain slapping on cover issue. Though I don't see a drivers side guide there? maybe I forgot what it looks like?

ENGNBLDR is the way to go IMHO, for the Front End Kit or FEK (call them up or search eBay for ENGNBLDR. I got my timing kit and head from them and tons of guys here swear by them.

My guess is what you found it old wreckage. Doesn't hurt to get a new timing kit and re seal the front end with new parts - it's cheap insurance.

 

It looks like you already have a steel backed timing guide. And on the piece that is broken there is red rtv. Where did you use red rtv? I don't see any on the timing cover is why I ask.

 

i see red RTV between the head and the block. it must be from there.

 

There is some red rtv. But the broken piece isn't from this set up. Must be from a previous. Anyways the tensioner, should I be able to easily compress it with my fingers?

 

yes the tensioner runs off oil pressure
