speedometer cable on My can O worms

SO, On my recent 1982 pickup 4x4, I have dove in head first on the 22r desmog, courtesy of Kawazx636. That is going well after I had to remove 3 broken bolts from the PO, one broken by me, and tap 2 others to get all the bolts to fit right. On installing the manual choke, I learned that there is electrical tape holding something together on the accelerator pedal, that cable is loose, and the throttle linkage is bent. there is more, but will save that for another thread
The speedometer and odometer do not work. While I was under the dash installing the choke cable, I reached up by the speedometer cable and unplugged it. The cable was there so I put it back in. I then checked the other end by the trans or transfer case and unscrewed it. That end was in place as well. I went to twist the inner cable to see if it would move and it did and very easy to pull out. I pulled out about a foot to check it and then pushed it back in. I need to know if any one knows how to test this cable? Can I pull this inner cable out of the entire speedo sheathing? Or do you think it snapped somewhere and that is why its moving easy? Appreciate any thoughts....or prayers

you can pull it out if the seals are broken , but this does not mean it wont work ...

you can test it simply by having it hooked up to the speedo , and "twist" the cable with your fingers

Thanks Slacker, I spun it and it moved the speedometer. So I figured it had to be the gear in the transfer case that I have been reading about. I am prettysure I found the problem:

Was that plastic gear actually inside the transfer case? Also I can pull my speedo cable out of its rubber hose and push it back in. My speedo works but won't hold steady. Jumps around ~3 mph.

Yes the gear is inside. Follow the speedo cable to the transfer case. Unscrew the cable and remove it. Remove the bolt with the metal wedge and then you can easily pry it out. The gear should come out with it. There is a small ball bearing they may stay inside, so if you don't see it, poke your finger around inside the transfer case and see if you can find it. My new gear had an extended plastic bottom so I did not put the ball back in. I hope mine works that way as I have not tested it yet.
If the gear looks fine, it is probably your speedometer acting up.
