Is the air gap on a 3vze distributor adjustable?
my Ne pick up is .1mm where as it should be .2-.4mm

Air gap:
0.2 – 0.5 mm (0.008 – 0.020 in.)
If the gap is not as specified, replace the distributor
housing assembly.
This is from a 93 fsm not sure what year you have.

 

its a 1990 that what i was wondering the 1993 fsm shows a distributor that doesn't look like mine. Mine has the triangle rotor

 

I can't find it but I seem to recall being upset the 3v had a replaceable signal generator untill I found TSB with the part number for a 22r series.

Being too close shouldn't be a bad thing unless the bearings are failing let it slam into the pickup. Double check it a few times 0.004" is pretty easy to get wrong only takes a slight twist in the gauge.

 

Everybody, YES the gap is adjustable. Just take out the distributor (and don't forget to mark where the rotor is) and where the post are are two screws. Just loosen those and adjust the gap with a feeler gauge.

That is was what I was wondering, I just thought i would ask before tearing stuff apart didn't want to be the guy that tore it a part then wondered why my truck doesn't start.

 

5. Using a non-magnetic feeler gauge, measure the gap between the signal rotor and pickup coil projection.

G1 Air Gap: 0.008 - 0.016 in (0.2 - 0.4 mm)

G2 Air Gap: 0.008 - 0.016 in (0.2 - 0.4 mm)

NE Air Gap: 0.008 - 0.016 in (0.2 - 0.4 mm)

NOTE: The air gap is not adjustable. If any of the above tests reveal a pick-up coil outside specifications, replace the distributor assembly.

this is what alldata says the fsm doesn't seem to talk about adjustment. There doesn't appear to be any slotting to the holes were the screws are on the pickups to allow adjustment. Just be skeptical

 

I know for a fact that it's possible because I replaced the electronics in my distributor and obviously had to adjust the gaps. I can't remember if there are any slots to adjust it but even if there aren't there's still enough play to adjust them properly.
