Hey Guys,

My 82 wont start by key, but runs fine if you pop the clutch. New starter, new plugs, newer wires, and I cleaned the distributor. It turns over quickly enough that it should start, but doesnt fire. What is the next thing I should check?

Pop the clutch and it runs? That is odd.

Is it getting any cold start enrichment?

Possible poor ground causing weak spark while cranking?

What is your timing set at?

 

Yes it is very odd. I am stumped.

I have used carb cleaner a few times, and it hasn't made a difference - not even a half spark.

The ground is a good thought; would that change matters for the popping the clutch start? Where is the ground on an oem truck? Mine is just ground out about 10-12 inches from the neg terminal on the battery and its just a bolt screwed into the side of the engine bay sheet metal.

Im not sure about my timing, but adjusting it didn't change anything.

 

Yeah, kind of sounds like maybe it's not getting enough juice to spark while cranking.

Make sure that is grounding out on bare metal. Also, maybe check voltage to coil while cranking.
