12,000 warn how to tell if good
Our mechanic shop at work recently cleaned out their storage area. The mechanics found a 12,000 warn winch, I ended up with the winch, roller fairlead, cable, hook and control. Nobody could find the solenoid box or wiring. Is there any way to tell if the winch works without the solenoid box. If it works I was going to try out the contactor switch instead of using solenoid. But don't want to spend the money if the winch is no good. I understand that the winch is overkill for a yota but it was free.

If you have to ask how to test the motor it might be a good idea to get some help in person . Pretty much all the control does is reverse polarity so you have in and out under power.Just a fancy DC motor when it gets down to the basics some have thermal protection most of the older ones don`t.
Is the plate with the model and serial number still attached .
Have you checked that it moves free when in neutral ??
Is the cable still on the drum??

Well i have already hooked to a battery once to see if it would run, nothing happened.I was checking to see if I had to have the solenoid pack. The winch has no cable and it moves free in neutral.

Just check that the brushes are free and not worn out.
The fact a 12,000 pound Warn winch was just tossed aside does not bode well.
Since the cable was removed I thinking it was burned out.
Since if you tried to power it up and it did nothing one to positive one to negative it should have turned
