Gas tank/fuel lines question...

My friend has an 86 4runner with IFS and EFI. He has a leaking gas tank or possibly a leak right at the line going into the tank. It seems more likely that the leak is in the tank because while at first it only leaked under pressure and right after it had been run, the last time it was moved it leaked out the rest of the tank which was a few gallons.

He's been calling around trying to find lines and a tank, and dealers are asking for the vin# telling him the fuel system is vin-dependent because it could any one of a half dozen or more systems for the the 1st-2nd gen 4runners. I was wondering if anyone could confirm this to be accurate? I have an 88 parts truck with a solid tank and he's going to switch to braided lines anyways, but I don't want to pull the tanks to find out they don't fit. As always, ya'll's help is most appreciated!

The Toyota Parts system is set up around the VIN

There parts catalog is a nightmare to use without that number so trying to find parts without it for some of the parts guys can be interesting .

I know with fuel tanks there are a few different options.

Then sometimes the same part can be listed under several different part numbers.

So if you take the two vin numbers and compare what part numbers you get even that might not help

If you can fabricate you can just about make any one fit.

Truck tanks and 4Runner tanks are not interchangeable. Compare where the filler necks are at and you should see what I mean. If it is just a pinhole, there are ways of cleaning the tank and sealing with Red-Kote. Here are some suggestions, other wise it is buying a new tank.

Minor fabrication is never really a problem. Any idea of what the worst case scenario would be in trying to make one fit?

Edit: @Terrys87

The parts truck is also a 4runner, but good catch and my bad on the semantics.

I believe the gas tanks will interchange with no problems. Usually it is the sending units that have the different part numbers. One option is the low fuel light. I have swapped a few and never had any problems as long as it is 84-89. If one sending unit has one more wire then the other, probably the low fuel light.

.
Worst case scenario is if you don't get ALL the fumes out and have an explosion.

I work with gas tanks at the radiator repair shop and have had a few good scares. And that's after I hot tanked them (which usually gets all the fumes out) and flushed several times. That usually isn't much of a problem with a clean tank. It's the ones that have been sitting for years and have piles of rust inside soaking up a lot of old gas.
