TRD supercharger rebuild.
I know, I know my truck is a 92. But seeing as how I have a motor from a 97 4runner and most people that have TRD sc will Look here, I felt it best here.
I picked up my second gen TRD sc off craigslist for $400 (yes $400). There was no indication of the history or miles on the unit I just threw it on and hoped for the best. Since then Its racked up about 20-25,000 hard miles. It ran from a 2.3 pulley, 2.2 pulley, and finally a 2.1 pulley.
The sc finally starting making a louder than normal bearing rumble at idle. So I picked up a rebuilt snout from the dealer. After about 1000 miles the sc started to have a bearing squeal when the rpms would drop.
I called several different sc rebuilders that I found via the web. The cheapest and what I thought were the most in the know place I spoke with was Embree Specialty Machine http://www.embreemachine.com/
The second they got the sc they called me to let me know. Not a day later I received a phone call from the shop manager to inform me that he noticed the snout was heavy to turn and lacked proper clearance between the pulley and the snout housing. His explanation was that several places (magnuson) included, do not press the pulley shaft far enough into the bearing for the snout. This in turn pushed against the rotor assembly and that into the housing at the rear. Well that was money well spent right?
The third call I received was not good news. His thoughts were right on the money about the snout. He also found the coating on the rotors was coming off. And the worst part, one of the rotors was ruined by a dried bearing in the rear of the housing.
Now what everyone wants to know, cost. Keep in mind this is for my sc and cost will vary by the condition of each sc. I'm also choosing to have the rotors recoated for optimized performance.
Work Order - Itemized:
$ 760.00 Supercharger Rebuild Service: TRD with attached manifold
$ 149.00 Coating Services: Rotor coating - pair
$ 145.00 Rescue & Repair Services: Replace shaft in one rotor
$ 000.00 Rescue & Repair Services: Bypass valve assembly adjustment
$ 000.00 Use red Aluminum pulley. 2.100" diameter
________
$1054.00 Subtotal without shipping cost
$ 106.25 Shipping
________
$1160.25 Total due
I will update the thread when I get my sc back. But for the mean time, just based on the customer experience I have received so far I would recommend them.
Now the pics

Well good to know there is another rebuild option out there although the coating service was not needed at all.
Eaton says that the coating does not effect the superchargers performance and that there is no reason to ever have it recoated. It is there for noise/vibration dampening. When injecting water/meth like you IIRC though that does a much better job.
Otherwise glad you got it working again! Oh how I want boost again.

I heard two sides to the argument, one from eaton and the other from places saying they dyno tested the theory and said they were able to pick up an extra pound or so of boost. Putting my setup against other similar rigs, I was making the same boost with the 2.1 pulley as they were with the 2.2 pulley.
I also just found out they will credit me $125 for my old snout that I have sitting around. Just gotta get it in the mail.

yeah! glad to hear you got your blower back, mine will be headed off not too many miles down the road. Turned over 178k this morning, installed at 129k, still holding on good. come about 200k I will be rebuilding the motor and rebuilding the SC most likely also.
also curious to see if you pick up any more squeeze.
woot woot!

Why rebuild the motor? Something wrong with it? These things are tanks, unless something is wrong with it that is causing you issues I would run it till it blows personally. You won't gain much/anything with a rebuild unless you change the compression ratio but better off with other options for more power IMO.
Turbo being at the top of that list.

Subscribed too. You are still less invested than a new one cost if you don't count the down time and work.
Sounds like you got great service from them. The coating sounds like a good idea to me if you can swing the cost.
Good luck with it.
