HI, I just bought this 1986 1ton pickup for $600 and drove it home. As soon as I got home I through it in the garage and found out that it had Number 3 cylidner bad. Do you guys think this was a good buy? I figure I do the head job and timing job, then I should be able to get it running. And what is the difference between the 1ton and half ton? Are the rears different gear ratios? and are the 1ton truck rare and worth a lot more than a regular 2WD halfton? Thanks.

For $600, I would say yes.



I believe the 1 tons have the 8 inch rear, which would facilitate getting a differential locker if you wanted or needed better traction.

And I believe the 1 tons came as a 4-gear transmission.

And no offense to your new purchase, but Toyota would not put those monstrosity lights on their truck.

And honestly that rear end looks just like mine and about 100 others I've seen so I'm curious to see what makes these 1 tons also.

 

I have been trying to find out the difference too? There are 8 leaf springs, how much are in a half ton

 

With my 2WD 1/2-ton, the spec placard at the firewall shows that I have a 7-1/2 inch differential.

 

So the 1ton dif is a foot bigger?

 

I was thinking about rebuilding the head myself? is there a thread on here that shows you how? or would it be best to leave it to a profesional?

 

no, no, were talking INCHES here. 8 inch differential as opposed to 7-1/2 inches.

The inches pertain to the gear ring in the differential, not the dimensions of the casting of the differential.

So what makes this thing a 1 ton. It looks like a regular 2wd truck. The ones around here that are 1 tons have dual rear wheels and larger front ends.

Hopefully someone figures this out because im wondering what makes them a 1 ton, I saw that someone said the valves were bigger in the 1 tons to give them more power, But I do not know about that? Seems a Little far fetch?

You would think there would be a spec sheet somewhere comparing a 1/2 ton truck to a 1 ton with the differences?

 

Those dualy truck are what Toyota calls C&C, which stands for Cab & Chassis. The C&C versions were made so that aftermarket manufactures could install something in place of the standard bed, like a flatbed, or camper, or a box bed for moving companies, etc.




I do know that the some of the rear components have different part numbers from the 1-ton to the 1/2-ton models. But I'm at work right and don't have the information to give you right now.

The EFI engines naturally produced more HP then the carburetor models without any internal modifications like cams.

 

Heavy duty rear springs, full floating rear axle… or the FF axle might have just been on the dual rear wheel models. That's about it, AFAIK. The frames were already stout as heck from the get-go, so they just got a little beefier running gear.

 

The cab roof lights, extended side mirrors, and (clipped?) front bumper indicate, the tow and maybe snow plow packages.

The rebuild is a pretty straight forward task, making sure it is in spec is probably best left to the machine shop.

I'd suggest you clean and paint that spare tire before it rusts away.

 

I only see 5 leafs per side... Where are the 8 leafs?
