3.0l runs and shuts off after 5 seconds

im a new owner of a 1992 4 runner, 3.0 sr5

my issuse is, i can start the eninge with no issues, it runs for 5 seconds and shuts off, like i turned the key off. IF i hold the starter for about 5-7 seconds, it will stay running, drive. When i do this i hold the key at the start position for a while longer till i notice the lights brighten up, then it runs. most of the time i can shut it off and it will start again right away. if i leave it more than few seconds, i have to hold the starter longer again.

i've tried a another ignition, maf, battery

i'm mechanically inclined, but being new to toyota, i thought there maybe something else i can try to diagnose this issue.

i was cheching around the engine with the voltage tester, and i have a over-voltage issuse.
The next question i have is, would an over-voltage cause it to shut off?

the tester reads the voltage at about 14.5V

That voltage is ok, depending on where you're checking. But it's nothing to fret about. How does the key (ignition switch) feel? Stiff? soft? Can you feel the steps clearly? Off, Acc, Run, Start. Could be the ignition switch cutting things off. Just an idea...

don't know if this helps, but my ignition is wiggley on my 86, and to get the truck to start everytime you need to turn the key all the way forward and wiggle it from side to side.

after its one click back and engine running, a lot of times I notice my cigarette lighter doesn't work. All I need to do is wiggle my key a certain way and it comes on, so maybe you have a problem like that.

though, i'm guessing a new ignition would rule that out, but theres food for thought

oh, forgot to mention, I have the same symptoms. If I hold the key forward for a few seconds before I wiggle it to start that usually keeps my cig lighter on.

and if I hit some hard bumps or something that will shut it back off.

and yes, I have made sure the lighter was not faulty, and confirmed it is the key thinking it should be off

I've even tried another ignition.. i dont really like the feel of the new one.. but its still the same symptoms.. i'm testing the voltage at the battery. when the engine is off it is at 12 v then jumps to 14-15 running.

i think i'm going to try some relays. efi and starter?

When it dies, does it sputter and slowly decreas RPM and then die, or does it just kill immediately?

I know what you said earlier, I just want to verify.

Also, you can check relays(EFI, COR, etc) and let us know what you find.

ok so when it dies, it slowly dies, the rpms decrease and then spudders and just dies out.. if i press the gas pedal it will rev up, and die, no spuddering

i think this evening i'm going to replace some relays efi and starter.

ok, so i've changed out some relays and fuses. i found that the previous owner had soldered the fuseable link going to the fusebox. so i replaced that with one from the junk yard that was still good. i checked (with out a guage) and the fuel pump blows tonnes of fuel.. i do have a question about the fuel system. When i turn the key to the run postion, is the fuel pump supposed to be pushing fuel? When i hit the starter the fuel pours out. i'm guessing once its running the pump runs?
