New with a question: Lifter noise on 4.0

Hey all, new here and looking for an answer. A deer recently demolished my Tahoe and I always said I was going to get me a Tacoma when I got rid of my Chevy. My old man has a tundra and I have always liked the toyota trucks.

So the local dealer let me take an '07 Tacoma to drive for a couple days, its a 4dr, long bed, TRD sport model with 30k. I really like this truck but there seems to be an awful lot of lifter noise coming from the engine, it seems louder on the driver side too. Is this just how these 4.0's sound or no? Maybe someone neglected oil changes. I'm going to go back to the dealer tomorrow and look at and listen to a few other trucks with the same engine and compare, just thought i could get a little more insight here seeing as talking to some sales people is like talking to a wall.

Thanks guys and see you around here more often when I finally get my Tacoma.

My 4.0 has a similar noise; sounds like your typical valve ticking, but you never notice it unless A) you actually step out of the truck and walk up beside the engine bay while it's running, or B) pull beside a building on the driver's side like a drive thru. The engine has 73k miles on it, and it's done it since I got it a little over a year ago at 60k miles. No ill effects that I see; the sound doesn't seem to have changed since I've had the truck, and different oils don't seem to effect it, so I'm not too worried about it myself. However, my lack of concern for it may be partially due to the simple fact that I can get a replacement motor for next to nothing through work

But, at the same time, every once in a while I hear what I think might be a slight exhaust manifold leak, which is commonly mistaken for a valve/lifter tick too. I haven't dove in and looked for an obvious leak yet though, but that may be something to check out in your case.

Yeah talking to sales men can be a waste of our time... if could be running on 3 cylinders and they'd be all "that's normal for a pickup truck, it's suppose to shake like that"... lol. When I bought my 06, I knew what I was looking for and what I wanted. I told them and said do you have one that matches, and don't even bother telling me about the ones you have that are not this!

Welcome to the forum! Hope to see pictures of the new ride here soon!

It is common for the early 1GR to be noisy. As long as not loud enough to make you concerned, just curious it is most likely normal. The new 1GR is much quieter.

My 05 4runner with 4 liter has a little valve train murmer too.

Just the usual noises, nothing to get concerned about.
