Exclamation 22RE Need help passing NEVADA SMOG!!!!

Yesterday I bought a 1985 Toyota pickup with a 22RE in it. I went to go smog it today and it ˟˟˟˟ing FAILED! BUMMER! I need some help trying to get it to pass...it failed the idle test with 495 parts per million with a max of 220 and the High RPM which got a 261 parts per million with a max of also 220. Any idea are welcome I need all the help I can get!!!!! THANKS!

When was the last time the oil was changed? The HC in PPM is hydrocarbon. Old, dirty oil can contribute to higher ppm. Its basically straight raw fuel/petroleum. If its been a while since a tune up, a good clean spark can help lower HCs. You can sometimes lean out the carb if the air/fuel screw has been tapped out, but if it hasnt, now may be a good time.

You can even try to run a slightly thicker oil for the emissions test. If you're running 10w-30, try a 15w-40. Yes its predominantly a diesel engine formula, but it'll work. Or even Seafoam run through the carb and tank could help clean up some things. I have had good luck with the in-tank additive Redline SL-1(or something like that) fuel system cleaner. Some guys even run a bottle of rubbing alcohol through the tank, which they say helps it burn hotter, which cleans up the combustion process. But I personally have no experience with this method.

There are a few things you can do to clean up those HCs. You're not that bad off, so tune it and clean it and try it again.

Thanks Rokblok! The oil in it is new but I will go get a thicker oil tonight after work. I haven't checked the air/fuel but wouldn't I screw it IN because theres unburned fuel? Along with the new oil I am going to pickup a bottle of that Redline stuff...I have also heard that a company makes an additive just for smog? What do you think of it? Thanks for the help man it really took my stress down a bunch!

Now, Im not saying it will pass with flying colors, but your HC PPM isnt far from passing, so maybe with a coule little things it can sneak past. With the air/fuel mix screw, Im not sure if its an air bleeder or a fuel bleeder. I believe its an air bleeder, meaning if you screw it out, it allows more air to sneak past and mix with the fuel. If you screw it in, it limits the air, so you have less air to mix with the fuel so it richens the mixture. But if you screw it out to much, it can lean it out to much, and cause a lean miss. Which is more noticable with higher altitude vehicles. A lean miss happens wen idling. It'll be purring smooth and then you can hear an occasional miss or fluctuation in the idle. Lean miss can affect your emissions a good bit. Since it is a miss, it just releases all the unburnt gases from improper combustion(the lean miss) into the exhaust. And the emissions sniffer sees it...

Thats why its important to jet a carb properly for altitude. If your truck came from sea level originally and you have it at 4500 ft now, it can cause problems. Newer fuel injected vehicles have O2 sensors and computers to adjust the air/fuel mixture on the fly. Carbs dont have that option.

Tune it, time it, and clean it up. Thats the cheapest, best shot you have right now.

Check your cat, mine failed once because the cat was hollowed out. I also cleaned out the intake and it passed in seconds.

change the oil , new plugs and put a new cat on it should clean up fine, unless the carbs worn out, if that's the case I would see about changing to and efi engine

So I went to go check my timing the other day and it was flashing with the mark on the pulley about 2 inches counter clockwise from the 5*! I loosened up the bolt to adjust the distributor and I could only get it to the 8* due to it couldn't move anymore. SO!, I went to go test drive it and it was absolutely gutless! I turned the truck off and it was just about impossible to start back up so once I got it started I put the distributor back to where it was....I have been hearing from some wheeling buddies that the timing chain is bad??? Which could also be the reason why its not passing along with maybe intake valves being off blowing too much fuel into the engine resulting in unburned fuel?? What do you guys think? BTW samiam39 its the 22re its already fuel injected

new timing chain always made my 22re run better.

the single row chain stretches and throws the valve timing off.

if you tune it up, new plugs, wires dizzy cap and rotor button with the new tc, you should be good. seafoam and a new fuel filter also.

If you have a 22re you have no carburetor. If a basic tune up doesn't fix the problem, I would suspect internal wear on engine components or a faulty catalytic converter. When you checked your timing did you short the check connector under the hood to cancel out ecu advance of timing?

Changed he timing chain and components last night runs WAY better!!! Put 15w40 in it along with some Smog formula for the gas. After work im gunna go smog it and see how it does! If it still doesn't pass I'm gunna look into a new cat.

Brianh yeah I shorted the plug under the hood....JUST FAILED AGAIN after new timing chain and components, valves adjusted (2 intake loose 1 exhaust loose), new oil (15w-40 like rokblok suggested) and filer, and some smog stuff in the gas...NOW what shall I do? New Cat??? I noticed that my timing has to be advanced for it to even run decent or even start...if I brought it all the way to the 5* it would be super gutless...so I kept it a little advanced just to the left of the number scale..................Any suggestions? Thanks again!

Will do donomite! And rokblok I have no idea...it went to second chance mode and the computer had a glitch and stopped reading the RPM's and basically reset the test and the dude asked if I wanted to retry it so I said no because it was doomed to fail again and it saved me $15! Lol I wish I knew now to see if anything got better though!

If your cat is set up like mine you can unbolt both sides and take a look inside. See if the honeycomb is still inside. If not I can let you borrow mine, I think it's still good.
