Just got our 88 4Runner back from engine install and the alternator went out. Quickest solution seemed to be a night run to Autozone, but the replacement does not fit. Was able to clearance the lower bosses a little to get the pivot bolt in, but then the pinch bolt would not thread in as the hole in the alternator housing was too high.

Being a 22RE newbie, I can't see any adjustment available in the top or bottom mount, so it seems like the alt has to be drilled just right.

Any suggestions? I am sure one will be to not shop at Autozone. I am going to take a mic with me to the store, try to get my core back and then find another alternator.

get your original alt back and replace brushes.

the oem is better than any you will buy period.

brushes are cheap and easy to replace typical toyota...

 

Thanks, but the alternator was bad. Brushes were fine, experienced alternator tech check it and felt rotor or windings were bad.

Issue was that the bolt hole dimensions on the autozone unit were bad. Found one at O'reilly that fit OK and was able to get it bolted in without too much trouble.

Maybe I got "the" bad one at Autozone but it felt like it was about 1/8" off.

 

For clarification if someone searches this:

The alternator mounting bracket has a slip sleeve at the front of the engine. Do not use a washer under the bolt head. Hammer the slip sleeve back before you try inserting a new alternator on a 22-RE toyota 4-Runner 1 gen engine.








If the guy at the shop says your alt is bad - don't believe him at face value and just replace the brushes (or measure diodes and replace regulator and brushes for peace of mind. A "broken" denso is worth more than a remanned whatever.

 

Do you remember if the bottom bracket was threaded , at least on the back end? The pivot bolt on my 91 22re had a rounded head so I grinded it off. I can't tap the bolt out so it is either seized or threaded but I can't tell.
