I have a 84 pickup, 22r 4x4, manual. I've been banging my head against the wall on this. There is a block on the head between the #2 and #3 cylinders. And the steel pipe (w O-Ring) that butts up underneath it. I CANNOT for life of me get this to seal. I have tryd several different size o-rings including the one from the dealer. ive also had the block(on the head surface and pipe surface) re-surfaced. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

If you're desperate, maybe a handful of Permatex Ultra(Black, Grey, or Copper) silicone would seal it...

 

Circled in green is the pipe. Around the nipple goes the o-ring. ive tryd FIPG, grey, black, and blue.

 

YeAh ! that thing is a PITA ! I used a gasket and high temp silicone . but I know it was dificult to get the bolts lined up while the tension on that tube was not cooperating ,Patients good luck .

 

FFR. If u unbolt the keeper at the back of the head you won't have to fight with lining up the bolts. What kind of gasket did u use.

 

I think it was just normal gasket material grey though and I had to make it work cuz the kit I got for he head job didnt have that exact one and it seemed to work . I now am getting leaks in other areas good luck

 

Do u happen to remember if it was that thick rubber material or the grey material felpro uses? I have one more go at sealing this then its to the dealer for a new block and pipe. Looking at lil over 100 bucks for the 2 parts so im tryin not to have to eat that one.

 

Odd, I also used the OEM rubber o-ring and have had no problems at all.

Do you still have the part number of the dealer o-ring?

 

Mine was the thick grey and canot remember if I put a new o ring on or not

 

Extends mirror and snake light update. Got the ring sealed with a new pipe. Now it turns out to be leaking from head surface side as well. New block on order from dealer. If this doesn't seal it looks the machine shop will be replacing the head or resurfacing the intake side of the head. I'll hope for the best!!

 

What's that ! Replacing the whole block $$ how much compared to a whole new or new rebuilt ? cuz it probably your head . mine failed 1600 ago and now think it has done it again and a rebuild around here I 've seen for like 12-1400 any how good luck glad to hear you got that sealed up ! How far up nort are ya Oregon?

Not the engine block!! The water outlet block is being replaced lol. I just had my engine rebuilt in redding ca. cost me 1100 for complete long block rebuild including a new core head cause mine was cracked. Not a bad deal and the guy came highly recommended.

 

Got Er sealed!! Turns out the machine shop must have took off too much on the head surface of the water block. The bolts were bottoming out and not getting tight enough to seal. The block was pitted badly so they had to take quite a lot off I guess. Thank you all who replied!!
