After changing all the drivetrain fluids in my 87 ifs yota, i found this C clip in the transmission oil. It was actually stuck to the magnetic drain plug.




Does anyone know what this means for my transmission? Should I send her straight to the ER or let her live out her life in peace. It seems to be working decently. Just a little sluggish going from gear to gear. Thanks

Thanks for goin easy on me. Im not exactly sure which model transmission. It is a manual, 5 speed. Comes in an 4wd, 87 pickup, with an OE 22r, with IFS. My door placard doesnt seem to be lending me any clues either.... I'll keep looking

 

From looking at the part diagram, it appears the clip is for the reverse idler gear.

 

Well that doesnt sound too great.

It's still working though so...Whooohoo!

 

It should continue to work until one day the trans gets stuck in reverse because the gear slides farther than it's supposed to. Then you pull the reverse switch out of the side of the trans and use a screw driver to push the gear forward. Then you're good until you shift into reverse again.

So. It could be worse.

 

spare parts are an option, if everything still works, great for you, go wheel some more

 

Thanks for the replies. Im attempting to figure out exactly which g series transmission i have, and then get an idea if I can replace this clip myself. The internals of a transmission are something I have never dabbled with before, and apears very intimidating. Is the access bolt to rear gear easily gotten to. Thats good info for the time being.

 

Pat8942, Im having a difficult time finding it in the diagram. Is this clip what holds the reverse idler gear(part#33402), onto the reverse idle gear shaft(part#33451)?
