I just got done dropping my manual transmission and had a tube of toyota fipg black lying around. I used it to re-seal the front bearing retainer and the shift lever retainer. Obviously the FSM sais to use FIPG red on gear oil and black for oil pans. Anyone ever used the black on the transmission? Should I worry?

 

Well, it's not optimal. But it might work.

BTW, there's 2 kinds of black FIPG. 1207B for oil pans, 1282B for coolant. 1281 is the red FIPG for transmission/transaxles.

 

I have the oil pan FIPG but I did not know that so thank you.

I've stumbled across a couple of websites that show that FIPG red is an anaerobic sealer and would cure in the absence of air. However, I have seen the cured FIPG red both in the case and on the outside so I can't say I believe it.

Any more input out there?

 

You shouldn't believe it. Because...

a. You've observed it in a cured state in an aerobic environment. Which wouldn't be possible with an anaerobic sealant.

b. Toyota Seal Packing(FIPG) 1281(red) is equivalent to Three Bond 1281. The Three Bond 1200 series is silicone-based sealants and adhesives, the 1300 series is anaerobic sealants and adhesives. Meaning, Three Bond 1281 is not anaerobic, if it were it would be called 1381.
