HELP! Stalls in 4WD mode.

Hey Yotatech!

I was driving around the neighborhood testing out the 4WD mode. When shifting from 2H to 4H the dash indicates that 4WD mode is on. But when I drive from a stop, the car feels like it has a "load" on it, the back end squats and basically stalls the motor. I can hear one of the wheels lock up like it's dragging itself.

I remember when inspecting the vacuum lines, the previous owner crossed the line between the EGR and the VSV for the 4WD mode. Do you think this is a bad VSV or actuator? Or something messed up with the transfer case/differentials?

The vehicle is a 1991 4Runner 5 speed 22RE. Thanks guys for your help. Hopefully it's not an expensive fix.

When you say back end squats does it feel like the back end is pushing faster than the front is pulling? I don't know a lot but could it be different gear ratios. Just a thought. If it has manual locking hubs have you tried unlocking them and driving it with the front end disengaged?

You know what....i think you're right! The previous owner gave me a brand new set of Motive Gears for the front.

Would the 4WD engage if the vsv vacuum lines are not hooked up correctly and the indicator light doesn't come on?
