What does the box above rear axle do?

Hello, I need information about the brake system on a 1991 Toyota pick up, the part I am wondering about is on the rear axle the the part that travels from the box, down to the axle. From what I can figure it is some type of adjustment that would aid in braking if a heavier load was being hauled? What I am looking to do is eliminate this and am just trying to find out what parts/knowledge is needed to do the job, if there has already been a decusion on this I do appologize but I was not sure what the correct terminololgy for this was so the search did not yeild anything helpful. Thank you all for your advice.

It's called the LSPV, or load sensing proportioning valve.

I don't suggest removing it unless you are going to install an adjustable valve.

LSP-BV (Load Sensing Proportioning Bypass Valve)

It also lets you have your rear brakes if the front's loose functionality.
