My 87 Yota, 5 speed with 22r motor is making a weird noise from the tranny. Sounds like a weed eater. Thought it was my throw out bearing, but when I dropped the tranny the throw out bearing is still good. When the clutch is in the noise stops, but in gear its a loud rattling. What could it be?

 

Could be bearings

Rotate flanges by hand with tranny out of truck. Do it in all gears and in 4x4 low and high. Listen....hear dragging noises? Then probably bad bearings.

If bad bearings then gears are not aligned anymore and will wear each other down until the whole thing grenades.

 

What about in neutral with clutch out?

 

I would imagine you would still hear something in neutral if bearings are bad, since the input shaft turns no matter what (and there is a bearing on that...mine failed).

 

Thank you all for your comments, it is greatly appreciated. I beleive my issue is far more than what I thought. I have lost 1st-3rd gears in my tranny. So I am on the look out for another tranny that I can put in.
