22re Cold start noise and When letting off of throttle?

1994 22re 2wd 5 spd.

On a cold start in the morning the engine will make a rattling noise for a few seconds and then goes away. Also, when I'm driving down the road If I tach the engine up then depress the clutch to change gears there is a rattling noise.

I have taken the valve cover off and the chain is tight and the guides are not broken. I am running an OEM filter yzzd1 with castrol 20-50 oil.

Any help would be appreciated.

It may be little-end rod \ wrist pin bearings.

It could be big end connecting rod bearings too. My 3.0 was doing that before I took it out. the lower end in it was starting to get tired in it. All the bearings had brass showing. It could also be piston slap.

Most likely you are hearing the timing chain slap the plastic guides. its a common problem on the 22re and mine does it in the morning on a cold start as well, just don't let it go to long otherwise you'll wear a hole in the timing cover then you got problems...

I've looked at the timing chain and it looks good, no slack or anything. Sounds like I might be having a rebuild coming up.

173,000 miles doesnt sound like a whole lot though. I thought a toyota was supposed to run forever. I just bought this truck about 4 months ago..

anybody heard of a guy in kannapolis nc who rebuilds 22 re engines? Someone told me that there is a guy who sells them for $600 after core charge. And anyone have an idea what labor should cost for swapping in a new engine?
