3vze help - bangs out at 1800 rpm (new tps)
A buddy of mine finally entered into the Toyota world. He bought an 88 4runner with the 3.0 5 speed. Great looking rig, but it has a little issue. It idled at about 300 rpm and was very weak until it warmed up and then it ran fine even at highway speeds (but continued to idle low). We tested the afm and tps using the fsm and the tps measured bad. When the tps was unplugged it would idle up to 800. Put a new tps on it and it idled around 1100 but we did find a small crack in the air tube (plenum pack). Sealed up the leak and it idles at 800 rpm but it bangs out at 1800 rpm. If the tps is unplugged, it continues to idle at 800 rpm, revs up fine, and drives fine. How bad is it to drive it with the tps unplugged? Any suggestions?? All help is appreciated. Thanks

I don`t understand what you mean by bangs out at 1800 rpm ?. Its not good to run with the TPS unplugged. From what little I know about the 3.0, if the coolant temperature sensor is bad it can cause idle and performance problems.
