Dual diaphragm booster doesn't fit

Lots of bad info has been holding up my brake upgrade... First I buy some V6 calipers and throw out the pads, having read that they're the same size. They're not. There's another $15 and a few days of transit. I also buy a "hardware kit" only to find that it doesn't have the pins. There's another trip to the junkyard 20 miles away. And now this: trying to fit a booster from a '90 4Runner (same one as provided the calipers), having read that it's just a slight sheetmetal bend away from fitting... the hell it is. Huge clearance issue with the steering column U-joint ( and why are there two? or even one, when the wheel doesn't tilt?). Can someone tell me for sure what dual-diaphragm booster will clear the clutch cylinder and steering column? I've still got a few days left to exchange that part at the junkyard.

Read the Pirate FAQ. It's all there.

This might help. I still have an 86-87 Turbo booster ($till dual diaphragm booster) sitting on shelf ready to go on

Thanks to drsmash for finding a great way to improve some brake systems that are getting old and tired
I will be doing this one soon...

part # at napa: both 2 and 4 wheel 532460

the newer booster is a dual diaphram so it should improve braking dramatically.

Seems like there's a single/small (1st gen stock), single/large (3rd gen base models), dual/small (Turbo, some 3rd gens, the one I want), and dual/large (4Runners, V6 3rd gens, what I have that doesn't work). There's a couple of 3rd gens worth checking out at the boneyard.

I fiddled some more and determined that the dual/large would fit if I could replace the studs with longer ones and use the original metal spacer. So I took the booster apart, but the studs are pressed and possibly welded into some pretty thin sheetmetal, which bends with any attempt I've made to remove the studs.

Supposing I can make it fit, do you think there's any improvement of the dual/large over the dual/small? I estimate my rig's typical weight to be about 4500# when I'm done, so I want the best brakes I can get without too much custom work.

I installed the larger one on my Trekker , I used an 84-88 2wd steering shaft , (you can see it all in my build) .
HUGE differance in braking .. (I also have rear discs and braded brake lines) , with my 315/75R16 toyos , it'll stop ... almost scary it's so good

Check out page 3 of my build thread:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f197...43/index3.html

I completely upgraded the brake system on my '81 (minus the stock drums in the back). I used a dual booster for an '86 turbo truck and it bolted right up (just don't use the original spacer). Only thing I did was make a new gasket to go between the booster and firewall.

PM me if you have any questions
