Thought id document my repairs, as someone else may need a reference later on down the road. The first of my parts came in today, Aisin clutch kit and a new right hand tail light. Coming after the Clutch install will be a partial engine tear-down due to a blown HG, and possibly a tranny rebuild to boot

This is a 91 xtra cab pickup loaded with the famed 22R-E and 280xxx miles!

Thanks! Its Lived in California all of its life, never been wrecked or abused either. I will be repainting the rims, the black is beginning to chip off. I plan to get started tomorrow or the next day, based on whether i am able to find a way to move my toolbox to my new place.

 

Got my truck at my new house, began the simple work. I did some backyard Rock Crawling to get it where it is now . I did what i could with my basic tools, and replaced the broken out tail light! Feels good to finally do something with it. Also, pics of my Engine bay

She may be old and dirty, but she still purrs (sorta)
Ill be pulling the head sometime soon, probably after I install my new clutch components. She needs a new head gasket, and i hope thats all

 

Looks good man if you do spray that engine off be careful when I first got my truck it looked the same so I washed it down the dang thing didn't run right for 2 days!! And I was even careful not to spray electrical parts.

 

Haha ill make sure the cover is off before i do any spraying

Took some Pictures of the Damage, and began the first baby steps of tearing open the head. The first Pictures are of my Tranny, it is obviously leaking. Before it was given to me, this was a problem, and when taken to the shop they added some sort of stop leak additive to the Transmission fluid. I see new gaskets in my future.

Removed my air intake manifold-

 

Newbie question: Can someone tell me how to remove this plug/harness? It is a fairly good sized connector on top of the air filter housing. It looks like it has small metal clips that must be removed, but i could not figure it out.

Use a flat head screw driver to slide both sides off. Just stick it in the groove and slide either left or right. Careful, the clip comes off the bottom and gravity can be a b.... so you may want to remove the cover and flip it upside down first.

Follow the service manual while doing the head gasket and you shouldn't have any issues. Just make sure you have a complete gasket kit. You might as well do the timing chain while you're in there.

really nice find, wish i could find something like this is my area, been looking for weeks! head gasket isnt too bad on our truck amazingly and neither is timing chain, it just takes patience and a repair book

Going to do more today, hopefully I'll have the valve cover off by the end of the day. I'll post pics later tonight!

 

Glad I could finally answer someone's question rather than ask all the time. Good deal on the truck man. Mine was my dad's, too. I was 5 when I went with my mom to go buy it.

 

Yeah it helped a ton! I have the valve cover off, hopefully I'll have the head off tomorrow. I looked at the timing, it's in great shape, I'm not going to replace it. The groove is less than a millimeter deep, it's barley worn into. The cam and rocker arms are also very clean, no buildup. Pics coming in a moment (:
