My water pump is starting to leak fluid out of the weep hole on the underside of the water pump housing. As I understand it, this is a indicator that the water pump is beginning to fail. Toyota replaced the timing chain at 180,000, but I'm still running the original water pump at 220,000. What else should I replace why I'm installing a new water pump?

Drive Belts?
Thermostat?
Radiator Hoses?
Radiator?

Also who makes these parts for Toyota? I'm pretty sure the water pump is AISIN, but I'm not sure about the rest.

I would suggest the thermostat (with an EO replacement) for sure. I think the hoses should be fine as long as you check to make sure that they are not damaged (they should be easily bendable and not hard, and also not have any cracks). It would be a good idea to remove the radiator and give it to a radiator shop to give the core a good cleaning (if it has never been done). Not sure about who makes the replacement parts for Toyota though. Hope that helps!

 

That does help, I overlooked that I could pull the radiator and have it cleaned and tested at a radiator shop.

 

Drive Belts? Mitsuboshi and/or Bando - I believe both provide belts to toyota, but I'm not sure if the aftermarket branded ones (meaning TOYOTA is not stamped on the belt) are tested to the same specs or not. I personally use Bando without troubles.

Thermostat? Don't know, would get from dealer. Also consider purchasing the 2 stage thermostat as mentioned on the 4crawler web site, I started using that recommended one.

Radiator Hoses? Don't know, I like to get from dealer. Usually other brands have a little cutting to do or aren't bent exactly right.

Radiator? Like previously mentioned, have it cleaned, checked, and welded up if need be. They usually put a fresh coat of paint on it too!

 

For the drive belts it sounds like it is the same as my 4runner (Bando and Mitsuboshi).

I looked at the 4crawler site and found the 2-stage part number is: 90916-03070
I'll need to research switching to this t-stat.

 

If you have a plastic top or bottom on the radiator it needs to be replaced around 150k miles. The plastic deteriorates and eventually it will just go boom. you have to take the timing belt off anyway to get to the water pump so you could do it again if you wanted. Check all your pulleys make sure they don't make noise when they spin or have ANY play. If you didn't replace any pulleys when you did your timing belt I recommend doing all of them.

(I have not done water pump on a 22re but i assume it is a similar setup to the 5vze)

 

Get estimate for radiator cleaning and compare VS new. I pay $80 for cleaning my old radiator 6 months later my radiator go bad, new one can be cheaper.

The thermostat is marked: Kuzeh
The PS belt is marked: Denso and Goodyear
The Altenator belt is marked: Mitsuboshi

Hoses are hoses and belts are belts... if they look bad then replace them. As for the thermostat? Eh... its cheap enough to replace. The main question is... "What can I replace while the coolant is drained?"

Belts can be replaced without coolant drainage. A "flush" is nice but not req'd by a professional. With a cold engine, the thermostat removed, and the heater hoses uncoupled I start shoving my fully-cocked garden hose through different orifices. If the water pressure appears sufficient coming from the exiting end then its good to go.

I used rockauto for the water pump and hoses.

I ordered the AISIN water pump and Gates hoses. I know that Toyota uses an AISIN waterpump, but I was unsure about the hoses. I wasn't going to pay what Toyota wanted for the hoses, so I went with Gates.

The parts should be here tomorrow, then I'll have to find some time to get out into the garage.
