I just bought myself a m/t 4x4 blown 3.0. question is Do I need the 3.4 4x4 m/t ecu or the 3.4 with any ecu is fine? hope someone can answer me soon Thanks!

 

Also i'm in california, I can not have the Check engine light on. Will not pass smog!

Its easier if you can find a manual 4x4 computer but they're harder to find. I am also in California and I just finished swapping a 2003 tacoma into my 1992. From my own experience it's easier to swap in a pre 2000 motor also 2000 and newer is drive by wire which isnt that much harder just more wiring.

did u swap the 2003 tacoma with 4x4 or just 2wd? Cuz the dude that is gonna sell me the swap parts got a motor that is a 2001 toyota 4runner 2wd auto with harness.... I dont know if the check engine light will stay on due to it doesnt detect the tranny or so... IDK just incase where in California are you? If u are near san diego i would like to take a look at your swap if possible! Thanks!

 

seems its your lucky day i am in san diego near the santee drive in. I swaped 4x4 for 4x4. It is possible to use the 2x computer but i believe the computer will throw codes looking for input from the auto tranny that wont be there... you should be able to use the whole donor just find a 4x4 computer while the wiring colors wont be accurate you should be able to make it work even though it will be more confusing and way more work. If you are trying to make it smog legal with the ref you will have to substantially modify your gas tank bringing it up to par with 2001 standards...
