Hey everyone,

I tried searching for a topic like this but couldn't really find anything. I noticed the other day while driving slowly through my parking lot that there is a squeaking coming from the rear end. Since its just me I cant tell if it is just the rear driver side or both sides. It only happens at slow speeds. I am thinking of greasing the drive shaft coupling at the rear diff, and checking fluid in rear diff. I am wondering if anyone else has hear this noise and knows what it might be. The truck has roughly 175,000 miles on it in and it is a 92. Any help is greatly appreciated.

is it a constant squeaking or a repetitious squeak that increases in frequency as you speed up. sounds like maybe the drive shaft coupling to me,

 

if it ats slower speeds sounds like your rear diff. mine was doing the same thing for about 2 weeks then it finally went out. it complety snapped the pinion gear.

 

check and grease all ur u joints, and if it doesent go away try spraying something in the leaf packs. could be those just as easy.... if its still there ide start looking into the rear end....

 

its prolly your carrier bearing mine just started doing that replaced it and alls well

 

Mine was recently squeaking and seemed to notice it as I shifted. Come to find out, it was merely my leaf springs, so I sprayed them with some liquid wrench and ta-da, good as new and quiet again. Love my Yota!

 

carrier bearing would make a winding sound wouldn't it?

 

Well I ended up working all weekend but just got out right after work tonight to start looking into it. I greased all the U joints and bought everything to change the rear diff fluid. I drove about a 2 miles after greasing everything and the sound was still there. Tomorrow after work I am going to change the fluid. I will also try the leaf spring idea as well.

Whelan709 It is a repetitious squeaking that seems to get higher pitched as I speed up.

Dipasqualet44 Was your fluid low, do you know? worst case scenario is that an expensive fix?

I will also try the carrier bearing idea as well. I will keep everyone posted and thanks for the ideas to look into!

 

well might not be the coupling, i know in the subaru foresters, they had a recall for the carrier bearings, they go and you would only notice it at higher speeds but, more of a grinding sound, but could be be that. could even be a bearing. process of elimination!

 

yeah i was leaking fluid im guessing there was then in it. and to a point for me yes cause i have 4.30 gears witch was inpossible to find but you can find 3rd member for about 125$ plus shipping

 

Could be a rear wheel bearing on the way out. Is it a driveshaft rpm or wheel rpm squeak?

 

well last night i was able to change the diff fluid, drained it and then checked old oil for any signs of metal. only found a few extremely tiny pieces. I was only able to see them when i tilted the pan a certain way in the sunlight. The noise seemed to go away in the short time i drove it last night. this morning it started right back up I want to sort of eleminate the rear wheel bearings since it only seems to still make the squeaking at low speed while giving it gas. When I coast the truck in neutral or with clutch in to listen for noise I dont hear it. Am I right to eliminate bearings as a problem? since the would be making the noise any time the truck is moving. I am now starting to wonder if it might be the tranny or the transfer case, being low on fluid. I am probably going to change both this weekend to be on the safe side.

 

Did you check your ujoints? Try crawling under and rotating your driveshaft and see if you have any play anywhere

 

So the diff going out will only makes noise at slow speeds? Mine makes noise but it only starts at 45 plus mph. And only while giving gas. I feel your pain OP it's really annoying.

 

its kinda sounds like the pinion gear. mine was doing the same exact thing.

 

well i figured it out the noise was coming from the, I ended up doing the rear brakes and after cleaning them throughly and installing new shoes the noise went away. I checked the drums and they were fine no damage or grooves on the drums. The brake shoes didnt look to bad as far as wear but the noise has been gone now since replacing them. I also changed the tranny fluid the following weekend since it hadnt been done in a awhile. I figure fresh fluids never hurt they only help! Thanks for all the suggestions guys i really appreciate it.

Hey I was just wondering if that noise came back, I recently had the same problem and I changed my shoes and drums but the noise came back within a couple days.
