Speedometer is not workin in 1987 4runner

Hello I'm new to Yota tech. I just recently bought this 87 4runner and the speedometer isn't working. I have searches this topic and what I have read has lead me to where I am right now. I have a 22re with a 5speed. I took the gauge cluster out and checked the speedo cable and it it spun freely and then I disconnected on the Tcase and it spun freely. So what I did was hookup my drill the Tcase side and spun it in a counter clockwise spin and the speedometer worked, but when I hook it hack to the Tcase it doesn't work. I'm guessing it something to do with my Tcase. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. I am a mechanic but I work mostly on Hondas at a dealership and know and still learning about cars and trucks. So whatever it is I'm planning on doing myself. As soon as I get some more money and parts I plan on doing a build thread but for the time being I need to at least get this fixed. Will put pics up later when it's daylight. Thanks again

Just a little plastic gear on the tcase and it probably stripped or busted.

Speedo gear in the tcase is probably shattered to little plastic pieces. Just get a new speedo gear.

Thats my best guess

Ok thanks. Is that a pretty simple job? What do I need to do to relace it?

or just get a GPS

It's a Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). For the earlier years, it's the mechanical sending unit, not the electrical one.

When mine broke, I opted to get a $100 Garmin Nuvi GPS instead.

Well I finally found one at my local toyota dealer for $30. So I will be putting this in this weekend.

I'm currently trying to find a used transmission with low miles. If anybody has one for an 87 22re 4x4 in the Georgia, Tennessee or Alabama area give me a shout. My 3rd gear syncro is gone and first is starting to go.

That's funny cause for the last couple of days I have been using an App I have on my I phone to tell my speed. I don't know how accurate it is, but it was better than nothing.

Have you put the new gear in yet? I have the same issue with my 89 4runner. In fact it just quit on me tonight. Can you post some pics of changing it out?

If that don't work try searching 1987 HunterRunner's build thread. I'm doing this from my phone and I'm not sure if that work.
