Cylinder 3 misfire

I have a 97 4runner 3.4L v6 5spd with a flowmaster that just hit 250,000 miles. For a few months now it has been running weird. If I give it too much gas at one time it tends to cut out and not get up and go it sounds like a rev limiter in a way. It will do this cutting out thing when I am in any gear but not usually first and I get to around 3 thousand rpms unless I am getting up to speed slowly. If I am just cruzing and I floor the gas peddle it cuts out. Anyone have any ideas what this could be? I did a tune up, changed the 3 normal spark plug wired, changed the fuel filter, but I do not know what is wrong, and there is no check engine light on!! I do not want to spend a million dollars trying to figure out what is wrong with it!!!

When you say tune up??

Did that include spark plugs and air filter??

It has been doing this for several months??

Does the check engine light come on when starting perhaps the blub is burnt out?? It seems my 3.4 throws a code every time I look at it.

At that mileage when was the timing belt done last??

Fuel filter? Sounds like what a diesel will do with a stopped up fuel filter

I did not change the air filter, but I did change spark plugs the 3 normal spark plug wires, and the fuel filter. I just did not have the extra 200 bucks to change the coil pack things on the other 3. I do not know when the timing belt was done because I got it from a kid off of craigslist. It ran perfect even for having so many miles. I can not remember if it started doing it after I put the flowmaster on or if it was before. The check engine light does work it just hasnt came on yet.

My '99 had a recurring O2 sensor code, and a weird sort of slow throttle response. It ended up being the previous owner over-oiled the K&N filter on it, and it fouled the MAF.

Some MAF cleaning to remove the burnt on oil (the wire gets hot) and it was all back to normal.

Burnt oil leaves a sooty coating which serves to 'insulate' the wire, which can make it slow to respond to changing conditions, such as droppingthe pedal down. If the MAF doesn't sense the increase in air going into the motor, it will go lean, which is the opposite of what it needs in that situation.

I did clean the MAF with the spray cleaner and it did not help at all. I just do not want to spend a bunch of money TRYING to figure out what is wrong with it. If I could get some ideas on what to try that would be great!!! O2 sensors? MAF sensor? I had someone say maybe the fuel injectors??? or the cat could be clogged? Any suggestions?
