Picked up an 85 4Runner over the weekend

Found a pretty sweet deal on an 85 runner so naturally i had to grab it. The only two problems i know about so far is the clutch is smoked and the back window will not roll down. In fact it wont do anything. I got the transmission disconnected yesterday and its ready to pull. Probably be next weekend before i finish it up though. Its all stock with the original tan paint on it. The body is straight on it except for a couple of rust spots above the back fenders which is hard to find around my way.

Should i remove the shifters to slide the transmission back enough to remove the clutch and flywheel? Its been a while since i pulled a tranny out of one of these things.

I think its goin to be my daily driver because i sold my diesel and i want to keep the miles off my 85 sr5 pickup cuz its only got 155000 originals on it. I want to lift it 4 inches and build it into a mild trail rig. Im tryin to decide how to lift it. I thinkin chevy spring swap but i gotta do some research on it. Ill post a picture as soon as i figure out how from my iphone on the mobile version of the site. Unfortunately thats my only access to internet. I love livin in the country but it has its downfalls

I would remove the shifters since their easy to get out and their out of your way. Are you leaving the trans suspended while you pull the clutch? I've thought about that but always had the fear of it crushing me lol.

There is a way to text your pics to photobucket or facebook. If your on a touch screen it's a lot easier.

Yes, u need to remove the shifters. Entire transmission will need to come out. Not enough room to just slide it back...
Don't unbolt them.
The t/c selector has a large retaining clip that is popped out.
Trans shift lever retainer can pushed down slightly and rotated about 1/8 turn off the two pins to remove it.
I would rent a transmission jack.
The upper two trans bolts are a PITA to get to, have a lot of extensions on hand

Yeah ill definitely pull the shifters then. Ive got the ultimate tool for those transmission bolts. Its a transmission extension from mac that is 3/8 drive on the socket end and 1/2 inch on the ratchet side and its about 3 feet long. Makes it a piece of cake if you can get the socket on the bolt

HEEHEEHEE that makes me smile. IF your main interest isn't having conversations with your own phone... buy a droid...LoL
They're are great for all the other stuff that phones do.

Sorry, I was amused...

BTW... remove the shifters and replace all those little parts in there. IOt will make pulling the trans way easier. Put in new TCase detent springs and shifter socket n seat and feel the buttery shifts...

Haha the droid i had was awewome til about the 2nd operating system update then it became self aware and did whatever it wanted instead of what i wanted it to do. I had to get rid of it for fear it would cause judgement day and terminators would take over the world.

Thats not a bad idea about replacing the parts for the shifters. I think im gonna do that while i got it apart. Was looking at the fsm yesterday and it doesnt say much except remove the shifters. I couldnt look at the runner last nite cuz its in my buddies garage cuz his is nicer than mine. Thanks for the advice

Well i got it all put back together yesterday and i had a screw up alon the way. I think the new flywheel i put on is not right. I noticed in that the bolts that hold the dust cover to the block looked awful close to the flywheel but like an idiot i didnt investigate it any further. So after putting it all back together it became obvious that they are touching the flywheel cuz the engine is locked right up. The starter wont budge it and draggin it down the road and engaging the clutch wont budge it either. So now i get to do it all over again. Happy day haha

Finally got it goin this morning. The bolts from the dustcover were hitting the flywheel so we eliminated them. A picture as requested earlier.
