Here I go again...81 sr5...22r...I'm in the market for a new carb. How do I find the cfm of the stocker so I can get an aftermarket that's pretty close? I'm not looking for a ton of power right now, I just need it to run. Its a california emissions model and I plan on deleting and plugging almost all the vacuum lines and switches. What carbs have you used, what cfm, and how did they work out? I'm on a budget...jussayin...thanks!

 

I can't seem to find the link right now, but If I remember correctly the stock carb is something like 380 cfm. Don't get so hung up on the cfm's though, this isn't a sbc we're talking about here. I believe the Weber 32/36 is something like 300 or 325 cfm, the Weber 38 a little more, and your other common(somewhat) option is a Holley 350. If you're a big Holley fan, go ahead with the 350, but I think the 22r, even modified, doesn't use nearly as much cfm as any of those carbs can flow, so it's a pointless comparison.
I can tell you the Weber is a good choice, it eliminates just about all the emissions and once tuned, runs great. There's a little aftermarket support, mostly tuning though, not all out race throttle body modifications. I can't say for the Holley's, the only one I've dealt with was the 670 Street Avenger I put on my '69 F250 years ago, and I didn't have to tune it at all.

 

Yep...bought a weber 32/36 22r conversion kit a couple days ago on ebay, will be here later this week. Now I just have to figure out the vac advance...its a cali truck with a million vacuum lines...trying to delete as much as possible. Its emissions exempt here in Pa.

Thanks bigbear...but I got the gaskets, adapter plate, carb, choke lever and cable, and air cleaner assembly with filter for 259.95, free shipping, tax included. I wanted manual choke...I like the control. Now, does anyone know if I have to get a fuel pressure regulator to run the weber? Where would I get one?

 

Some people have gotten away with not having them, but I'd recommend it. Get the Holley one from Summit or Jeg's. Or whatever your favorite Holley dealer is. For the vacuum advance, you can either go off the port on the Weber to the port closer to the radiator on the distributor(I think), or go straight from the manifold. Mine works well straight off the manifold, but I also have a vacuum diaphragm from an old 20R because my original was torn or something and didn't work. You also may have to block off the fuel return line from the pump to the tank, but I didn't have to on mine.
