Reason I ask. I have 4.10 gears and a spool. What is going to break if i run 33's? I want to re gear in the future when i go to SAS but dont want to waste time re gearing the ifs if im going to have to do it again. Will the ifs diff give out ? Or is the problem the truck just having a lack of power? I've read a million threads saying I need 4.88 gears and that i'll be slow im just wondering will this cause additional strain to the point of carnage i guess on the IFs i know the rear should be fine with the spool. Thanks ahead of time. I'm also more than willing to just run the 31's for the time being also if thats the better road to go down.

Yes, should be fine as far as breakage goes. The 4.10 gears are quite strong. IFS seems to hold up fine to 33s until you add front lockers and dual t-cases. That seems to have been the point my buddy started having issues. He ran 33s w/ front locker for years w/o any issues, but once he installed a 2nd case and started running tougher trails, that when he started breaking front end. He eventually SAS'ed the truck.

Might wear out the clutch if you ride it a lot off-road.

 

My truck didn't start breaking crap till I added a front locker, 33s and 4.88s. even then, I've only broken ONE cv joint. the clutch tends to wear out pretty quick too, because i clutch in around corners to save the tires.

 

Your clutch will be the weak link.

 

Yep. Clutch is the issue. I have 31's and 4.10s and it's slow and the clutch went out prematurely.

It all depends on how long you will be before you do the SAS. I had to seriously look at the costs, our current income, more important purchases that need to be made. We're trying to build a 6 month emergency fund and get a 20% down payment towards buying a house, and I'd like to get a second car so I don't have to DD the 4runner.

I had to face the fact that it's going to be probably 5 years before I can afford to do SAS and the other major things I want to do. So, I will probably re-gear when i get new tires (33's) and put an ARB in the rear. Then when I do SAS I will already have 1 locker.

If it's going to be a long time before you SAS I would re-gear so you don't have to deal with wearing out clutches as fast.
